Also does SE to balanced conversion and vice versa, i.e. you can input the SE line out from the X5 and then connect your balanced headphones. I don't have the X5 myself, but have used the Intruder with my X3 and I absolutely love it!!

How about ALO Mk3b+ ??? what do you think??

I haven't tried the ALO Mk3b+ but I have heard some pretty decent comments about it. It seems like a very close competitor to the RSA Intruder, with the exception of the added bass boost on the Mk3b+. The only way you'll know how well it pairs with the X5 line-out is to try it. Hopefully you can find a dealer that has one that you can test, or if you can only mail-order, hopefully you can return it if it doesn't meet your expectations. I was quite confident on the Intruder as I had heard the SR-71B and the Intruder is a refinement of that device. In fact Ray now employs some of the Intruder circuitry in the SR-71B and will even update older SR-71Bs to the new circuitry just for the price of shipping your unit back to him. I've talked to Ray on the phone and his support is awesome so I can definitely recommend him. That said, if you can find the ALO Mk3b+ to try, it may meet your needs. Good luck with your search!

Can you guys recommend me some, especially ones with 1/4 inch headphone out?

Thanks!

I was reading somewhere in an X5 thread of a special match with the Stepdance portable amp

I don't find any particular amp that is a 'special match' to the X5. Just about any good portable amp with be a good match to X5 due to its neutral flavor. Everything else is more likely a choice of personal taste rather than an actual issue of synergy. This is contrast to X3 which does have a stronger flavor of its own and an amp can either compensate or enhance it, then we are talking about synergy.

Today Ive tried the mk3b+ duet and international+.. Duet is to warm to my taste.. I like the mk3b+ more than international+.. But still finding good amp that will fit my taste.

Which is just another reason the E12 DIY is a great choice for either Fiio DAP smily_headphones1.gif

I think something's wrong at FiiO. It's been days with no new firmware! The engineers must have staged a revolt and taken over the factories!

What is the diff between dx90 sound and fiio x5? I am kinda curious since the recent fw update on the dx90 changed the sound Sig.

Why does everyone think creating a balanced signal from an SE signal is a bad thing?
What do you think pro equipment does?

I've been meaning to post about that for ages. Balanced line inputs and balanced headphone operation are very different. For balanced inputs it's all about noise rejection so for portable use, balanced in, while completely fine to have, is not necessarily of benefit.

Balanced amp output though is about increasing the control over the drivers (separate positive and negative signals to each driver) and also increased channel separation / reduced crosstalk because they're not sharing the same ground.

You can have 100% quality via balanced output regardless if SE or balanced input. In fact, sometimes balanced inputs can reduce the final sound quality due to over complicating the input stage of the amplifier.

Anyone using the X5 with beyerdynamic tp51's? That's my proposed portable setup come the end of the year.

Actually you're right. In the end I didn't factor in the benefits besides noise rejection.
