Very true, the real challenge nowadays is determining if something is well mastered before you purchase it. I've heard 16/44 lossless rips that sound leagues better than some hi-res 24/192 files.

Easily the biggest difference. Brothers In Arms is one of the best mastered CDs I've come across. So much dynamic range for this kind of album genre (original 1985 release).

Exactly, generally the albums you always hear like that at Hi-Fi demo's, shows, etc. (Hotel California, Gaucho, Rumours, Brothers in Arms, etc.) are always shown off because they are mastered well, they sound better as an MP3 than Arcade Fire or Mumford & Sons sound in hi-res. I just hate the way they master albums nowadays since everything is mastered for car radios and Spotify, but that's obviously a topic for another thread....

Back to the X5 though, so I've been removing cover art from my albums and this seems to have,at least temporarily, removed the stuttering and track skipping issues. Also, as most of my music is from HDTracks, even after I delete the cover art file, the cover art generally still shows up on the X5 as the songs must have been taggeed already. No more dead DAP for me either, I've isolated that to a corrupt file.

Have you guys heard.  Marantz audiophile test demo cds?  They are examples of good mastering.  Sorry, the one below is all I can find, but there are many more.  I've heard horn sounds on one of the cds, never heard so much details and textures.

Even Eva Cassidy, her recordings are good examples of proper mastering.

I agree, with you, using LO to my O2 then to my HD650's gives me a very nice listening experience.

Happy to hear that it's working well now.

You might need to delete (from X5) and then recopy the files without album art to prevent art from appearing / causing problems, but if it's not stuttering, maybe the remaining art is all compatible.

Yes, indeed!

Keeping the amp flavour going, been playing with the Vorzuge, and - ignoring the red rubber bands (purely there to stop amp potential rubbing on X5 chassis, work in progress) we have:

So, the HS6 fits perfectly, as does the line out to line in cable - happy days smily_headphones1.gif

Very simple yet effective and secure, convincing pictures. Thanks Duncan!

^I'm probably gonna have to try that Vorz amp.

Speaking of mastering, I got

Daft Punk RAM > X5 (LO) > O2 (I hear more details with ODAC as source so possibly better amp match with X5 LO? Vorz?) > Hidition NT-6 CIEM

and it sounds very dynamic.  I didn't know how dynamic and well done this album until getting a quality setup recently.  It's an amazing album.  Never heard it like this.

Ultimately, yes - even if needing to use gain control, the X5 will power the DT770s, but - whether it will have enough driver control (start / stop precision) from the inbuilt amp for you, is hard to say...

Most people believe (using myself as an example) that the Sennheiser IE800 does NOT need an amp, however - for me, the extra precision - or, should I say - immediacy (forgetting volume or any other thing you'd normally associate an amp with) that an amp provides is a very welcome benefit...

Thanks for the response.

I find this stuff fascinating, partially because I don't think I have listened to enough high end audio equipment to know what I actually like. The step up from throwaway headphones to nicer ones allowed me to actually hear more of the music (like words in the background would suddenly appear). Adding the BioScienceGeek CMOY made it sound crisper, if that makes sense.

I suppose the best way to tell would be to actually try it out. I suppose we'll see after the X5 arrives if I feel I need an amp. The people saying the E12 hurts rather than helps makes me a bit nervous though if it turns out I feel like I actually need an amplifier.

Oh my.... It is already too late... You will enjoy the X5:)

Before you know it... you will have spend a lot, and I mean a heck of a lot of money on audio...

I blame Head-fi haha:P

I'm slowly climbing the ladder. Trying not to run up it (and somewhat succeeding so far!). :)

Hi guys,

Just received my fiio x5 and am absolutely loving it! However all of my songs are listed as 01...... and 02..... which makes finding the song i want very hard. I dragged them directly form iTunes and i do not know what to do to get the x5 to just display the song name like dynasty.flac for example.

Any ideas?

Thanks a lot
