Update on the Black Diamond from Doug -

--

Here are some production pics for the curious ...

BD_FRONT_PANELS.jpg
Some front panels just out of the laser engraver (and not yet cleaned)

BD_WOOD_CURING.jpg
Wood sides curing on the shop floor.

BD_OUT_OF_OVEN.jpg
A batch of populated boards just out of the solder oven.

BD_TEST.jpg
A fully populated board undergoing its first tests.

--

Remaining assembly, testing and packaging will be completed this weekend with shipments beginning Tuesday May 27th. Pre-orders may be made by visiting Doug's main page, www.ecpaudio.com. This will be the only run of Black Diamonds and there are some still available, less than he expected, though.

--

I will soon be comparing the Black Diamond, the Schiit Ragnarok, and Headamp GS-X2 for use with HD800s primarily. I will have a Black Diamond at the June 1st Dallas meet if anyone is interested in trying it.

Thank you for the update.  I'm very much looking forward to your impressions.

I hope we also get some L-2 vs BD impressions soon as well so I can figure out whether or not to continue my WTB for one or just pre-order a BD.  I've also been on the fence debating whether to drop the amount of cash needed to just go with the GS-X, but I like my tubes and keep leaning towards the L-2.

You'd be surprised that the L-2 doesn't really sound like a typical tube amp. It is only mildly euphonic but fairly linear across the frequency range, like a good solid state amp. It is quiet as heck! No noise so to speak.

That said, I'd love to hear the reviews/opinions of the BD. Intriguing enough to consider plunking down the $1500 for it!

A couple images of a completed Black Diamond, though the jack is confusing being a combo XLR/TRS. Normally it will come with a 1/4 jack, I believe, as seen on the prototype (link).

I didn't know it was going to have a balanced output combo jack like that, wonder if it will be balanced output of the transformers afterall...or just for convenience for people with 4 pin xlr terminations that dont want that shared ground.

Sorry for the confusion. It's just a TRS jack -- the 3-pin portion is not connected.

I used it because a) TRS jacks are all ugly, and this was the least ugly to my eye, b) it will fit the same front panel as a 4-pin jack just in case someone were to work on another amplifier that was balanced but which had a similar profile and could fit into a similar case.

Yeah that was my first thought when I saw it, 4 pin XLR for convenience like Cavalli and others do, but then I couldn't make it out very well and realized there was a large hole in the middle, and ding! 3pin XLR/TRS combo jack. Hmm.

Pretty much the only 3 ss amps I'm interested in for the HD800s. Looking forward to your impressions.

I assume you'll be pairing the Xsabre with them all (for familiarity's sake)?

Damnit Doug.  Is this amp going to be a single batch gone forever again?  Will price change?

Grumble Grumble!
