DX50 a new smaller DAP from iBasso. Spec. page 1. Impressions start on page. . . - Page 33

Not sure why so many people are trying to find out the characteristics of a certain DAC chip. A DAC's performance is much more about the implementation, and not so much about the actual chip.

I agree with you on this. Although if you have a great implementation on a high quality DAC chip you'll get even better results. But the implementation is the biggest factor as you said.

Yes but dacs do have characteristics. I can hear it in the DX100 and the 901, the Sabre dac.  The Sabre dac, to my ear, does not have the slightly warm sound of the 8740, which I have heard in most everything that it has been used in. I find the Sabre more neutral but they are both engaging, IMO.

Which is why I was hoping they'd use the same DAC & implementation in the DX50 as they did in the DX100... Very curious to see (well, hear) how they pull off the implementation in the DX50. Sonically, the DX100 is perfect to me, but I would pay good money for physical buttons...

Yes, but the Sabre dac is much more expensive, so the price goes up, and it uses a lot more current so there goes the run time or the DX50 would have to be larger to house the higher capacity battery. I like the sound of the 8740 so hopefully most everyone will be happy. I look forward to hearing the DX50 as many do and anticipate good things.

Any indication on a release date mate?

I think they did the right thing with the Wolfson and they will sell like hot cakes.

But for me, personally, A DX75 might actually be the right thing biggrin.gif

I'm spoiled by the sound of the DX100 but I'd love a smaller DAP with physical buttons. I'll wait for reviews of the DX50. And for news about price and release date...

It's nice to have choices. iBasso knows a lot about amps and obviously has learned about dacs, and they have a specialist that works on dacs, and with what they have also learned about getting the UI right, this should be a fun dap to use.

I would agree that certain DAC chips have specific sonic characteristics, but IMO implementation is more important to the sound. A fine example of this is the Yulong Sabre D18. It uses the sabre es9018 which is known as a very neutral, but natural sounding DAC. In the case of the D18, I would classify it as a warm sounding DAC almost to point of it sounding tube like.

I'm hoping the DX50 will sound neutral yet natural. So here's wishing!

As everyone already said, implementation is the most important factor. Clean power is the most important factor, second one is pcb design and grounding. 9V clean power on the headphone amp be achived by boosting battery level to somewhere 2 volt higher than the desired level and then go down with LDO to the desired level. The linear regulator will eliminate the switching converter noise.

The replaceable battery is a really good idea! Now it's just about the price and date!!!!

Fingers crossed that they don't want half a grand or more for this...
