Future Set-up Help/Suggestions

Hello all,

First off, i am pretty much a novice when it comes to most hi-fi audio equipment, but am trying to learn more and more. So i decided to come on here and ask a community that knows. I am a college student and have a pretty basic set-up right now (being broke will do that to ya). Right now, I've got a pair of AKG-240s, a cheap Bravo V1 tube headphone amp, and I'm running it off my MacBook Pro Retina with a pretty decent .flac collection of albums. I plan to get some HD650s in the summer, but right know i'm stuck with the AKGs. My question to you all is: 1. What is a good headphone amp that can replace the V1 for around $200-$300? 2. What kind of sound card/digital-to-analog should i get? I know that just using the headphone jack and a 3.5 to RCA cable is loosing me a lot of quality 3. What is the best .flac player for macs? I'm using Enqueue right now.

Thanks for the help guys!

Also, if there is another topic which deal with this exact situation or answers my questions, please link me to it

On a total budget of $2-$300, I'd say Schiit Modi/Magni. Fairly affordable at $100 each plus cables, and the Magni can drive just about anything-I've used it with everything from IEMs to orthodynamic cans, meaning it will last you just about forever.

Thanks ender! I like the combo. Do you know of any tube amps though in the same price range? Or does it make much of a difference? I've always been more partial to go tubes.

Look into the Little Dot tube amps. Quite a few people on head-fi using them, and there is an extensive guide on head-fi on tube rolling for the Little Dots.

thanks! I've actually been doing a lot of research lately and have found that a lot of people really like the Schiit Valhalla. It looks to be a great tube amp for the price. I have a few questions for those who know: Does it work well with the Modi DAC? I want to save some money if i can on the DAC (will only be using Mac with flac for source). Also, which headphones would be better to use with it, the HD 598 or HD600? I like bigger sound stages, but I don't know if such a low impedance headphone like that will work well with the amp. I know the HD600s have a higher impedance, but am unsure if that would make a distinctive difference.

Thanks again

Yes, the Valhalla will work with the Modi. According to their site, higher impedance cans are a better match.

Ok, so I think I've got it down to this:

DAC: Modi

Amp: Valhalla/Asgard 2

Headphone: HD 598/HD 600

My question which remains is which one will sound better with these amps. I've read that the 598s have a bigger sound stage, which i really like, but will these amps be overkill for it? Which in that case would the 600s be the better option? I know the 600s are harder to drive, but i assume that either amp will suffice in juicing them. I just don't want to end up buying an amp which I'm not using even half its potential on by having under-bought on the headphones.

Thanks again mates
