Reversible AKG K701 bass mod - Page 10

A few questions to anyone who can help me:
[ Again, I currently own a pair of Q 701 headphones Quincy Jones Signature Reference headphones that I have removed the round white port cover tape from, but I can replace it if necessary].
Where can a person buy the AKG K712 replacement ear cushions, and how much are they?
Also, which mod would you most recommend to increase the bass and better balance the overall sound with the least negative sonic effects:
1. Removing the round white tape from the port covers only?
2. Keep the round white tape over the port covers, and replace only the stock Q 701 earpads with K 712 earpads?
3. Remove the round white port cover tape AND replace the earpads with K 712 ones?
Thanks.

re: the K712 pads, you should read this post:

http://www.head-fi.org/t/582276/q701-appreciation-thread/5610#post_10283393

IF AKG in the US even has them yet, they'll be $58 for the pair before shipping (Frank usually ships FedEx Ground for $7, which ain't bad).  Doesn't hurt to email or call and ask him.

The problem is that AKGs Service Manuals for the K702 Anniversary and the K712 list the same part number for the pads, but people familiar with both say that the stock K712 pads are different.  you can search that other thread and read all about it.  So, actually getting K712 pads is problematic.  I took a chance and ended up with the Annie pads, which I promptly sold.  YMMV.

re: how to tweak the sound, I've done the bass port mod, added a strip of foam over the port when I thought the bass was too much, then started messing with the rings that cover the drivers (just behind the screen on the pads), landed on wool felt rings in place of the stock foam (or with the stock foam on top of those, which sounds good but touches the top of my ear, driving me crazy), and finally this morning put the original bass port stickers back on when stuff I was listening to last night was just too bassy.

Soundwise, at this point I prefer the leaner sound of unmodded (I lived with modded for a few months), but with the wool felt to cut some of the harsh highs I get with my Qs.  If my ears can take it, I'll probably put the stock foam back on top of the felt (or under it), as I liked the slightly added bass without giving up too much detail.  Kinda depends on the music, though.  Fortunately, it's an easy thing to mess around with.

My advice is to use your imagination and try different things, different combos, until you hit the one you like.

HTH.

Thanks ThurstonX for your answers and help. I greatly appreciate it.

Yes, I will try different mods and see which I like the very best.

Happy listening.

By request, I'm just putting this here. I did a measurement that accurately shows the Q701 sticker vs no sticker under 2khz. Anything 2khz is boosted by the microphone, but measurements show no change anyhow. I'd like to post it here, but it's easier for me to keep tabs I often visit in.

I'm sorry to ask this question and I'm seriously doubting myself but can anyone please explain to me how I can get the caps off the speakers? I have K702, not K701 or Q701s if that matters.

I already tried to follow this guide

http://www.head-fi.org/t/660408/reversible-akg-k701-bass-mod/60#post_10148238

by Jodiuh, but all I achieve is getting more scratches on the caps. They just won't move, no matter how much force I use. After like 20 Minutes of constantly  trying my fingers starts to hurt and the only think that I got to move is the nail of the thumbtack I'm using.

And yes, I am turning counter clockwise. I even tried it clockwise, like, just in case I got some weird unit.

It's definitely counter clockwise unless you got the northern hemisphere model... (jk). Definitely counter clockwise but I never had the K702 which are the anniversary edition correct? Maybe someone can answer here...

However I suggest a better tool than a thumbtack. I posted a few pages back of a hose puller that works great. Let me see..

Got the link up top. Not sure why the mobile version won't let me post down here.

thank you, you gave me the idea to look for some tools and now I'm using some kind of screwdriver with a pointy end which fits perfectly, but the now I have a broken hole on the left cap D: but I got it to move for 1mm :S

its like the caps of my K702 are build for the apocalypse...

Use 2 points... hopefully akg didn't glue ones in. If you got it to move then it should be easier tge closer you get to open. Probably 3-4mm turn is what you need to.

using 2 points doesn't help either, or, well gotta say, I only have my thumbtack for the second point.

Shoot me a PM and I'll walk you through it, ok?

I've got a busy schedule ahead, so might be a bit to reply, but we'll get you squared away. :D

So after PMing Jodiuh all kinds of pictures on how I'm trying to open the headphones and remove the caps, hes now at a loss of words either :D

He recommended me to just post all of the pictures here hoping that someone might have an idea.

so here are the pictures:

his is the tool I'm using:

This is basically how I try to open the cage

I also use my thumb to put on more pressure (weird angle because I had to hold my phone with my chin D:)

I also try to use two points using a thumbstack

But really, it barely moves at all, like it moves for 1mm or something...

This is how my thumb looks like, just to show how much pressure I'm trying to put on it

I also broke one of the holes in order to do this mod :/

It might be worth mentioning that I bought these headphones September 2011, just in case if someone knows if AKG changed their production process on those headphones in the last few years.

I think that some grills come off of the assembly line making a tighter fit.  Then we have a hard time removing them.  I have no issues with my K701, but my K601 is a problem as well.

woah no idea what happened, but I tried it again just now and BAM the cap just popped of

no idea what I did different this time, maybe I just found that one right hole^^

got the mod done now, definitely noticeable. Thanks to Soundsgoodtome for your suggestions and Jodiuh for the guide and help ^^
