Beyerdynamic Tesla Appreciation Society! - Page 7

Woohoo! Tesla Love! Great idea, Ian :) I started off with some Beyer DT880s back in early 2012, but ended up feeling a bit let down by them. I did a bunch of research and was pretty convinced that, regardless of what some folks said, the T1s would be closer to what I was looking for and not just a slightly better version of the 880s. In fact, it's great seeing DubstepGirl in this thread, cause I distinctly remember reading some of her posts from over a year ago that helped me make my decision. She's one of the most fair, unbiased, and accurate posters on this site! I bought my pair from Jan Meier of Meier Audio and literally within the first 30 seconds of having them on I was sold. I'm completely infatuated with their aesthetics and their comfort, and these phones will be with me for a long time to come. Shortly after that I decided to grab a pair of 1350s to play around with. I don't have to tell you guys what an amazingly good headphone this is...in my opinion, they are simply the BEST headphone "dollar for dollar" that I've heard to date. I use them every single day and they sound fantastic out of my iPhone, my Kindle, my ZO2, etc, etc.... I don't really have a "need" for the T5Ps, but I'm sure tempted by them! My most recent news is that I placed an order for a "Meier stack in black" yesterday. I've had such a great ride with my little Corda Jazz amp that it was an easy decision to send Jan a few more bucks for his top of the line DAC and amp. Usually takes about 10-12 days to get here from Germany, so I can't wait to fire it up and take some pics. My T1s have been slumming it with just a little AudioEngine D1 dac all this time, so I can't wait to give them some nicer gear to play with. The Meier crossfeed circuitry is pure genius, and it's the only audio enhancement I've heard that I not only can tolerate, but just love how it sounds. I've had amazingly good customer service from Beyerdynamic, from both the German HQ and also Pete Carini in New York. I take a great deal of pride in owning these babies and I love hearing from others about your experiences, as well! PS. Great to see some familiar faces from the T1 appreciation thread! EDIT: lol, what the heck? I used paragraphs, honest! Not sure why it's shrunk my post into one big clump! lol

Thanks for all the feedback.  I'll have T1's one my head tomorrow afternoon if the UPS delivery schedule is accurate.  I'll post my own impressions in the next few days.beyersmile.png

@Focker: while I've only tried the Meier PCSTEP with my Beyers (T5p), I really think there is a synergy of like-mindedness there that is really appealing. They're both so clear and linear, and seem to play off each other very well-- but not in that so-often-recommended manner where one item is called in to repair the flaws of another (e.g., pairing bright headphones with a dark amp). They both allow the strengths of the others to come through unmolested. The Classic amp is one I have on my must-hear list ;).

Honestly though, I really wish Dr. Meier would come out with a truly balanced amp... I know he prefers the method that he currently uses, and I'm certainly in no way qualified to point out the various merits or drawbacks to such a method, but I've seen several of those who (presumably) are suchly qualified who do seem to find problems with the setup. Plus, frankly, since I'd love to try a balanced amp and a Meier amp, a balanced Meier amp just ticks a lot of my nerd-love check boxes :P

when i had the stagedac/concerto n t5p...it was too bright/clear for my ears.

Interesting. I wonder how much of it is my apparent preference for a uber-clean, slightly bright sound. Still, a T1 from a Classic is a setup I'd kill to hear, just to know if it could sound as good as my irrational hopes lead me to believe... ;)

Heck yeah, I think probably a lot of people would love to see him come out with a balanced amp. I'll have to ask him if he's ever considered that. I know that he posted last year that he was going to be less aggressive in terms of coming out with lots of new products, but I'm sure he'd create something amazing if he were ever motivated to go that route!

The Corda Jazz I have is beautifully neutral. I'm usually a tube guy more than solid state, but this little amp sounds fantastic with the T1s. I have a tube buffer that I'm quite fond of, so if I ever want to give the Jazz a little bit of tube goodness I just fire it up.

I haven't had much exposure to Dr. Meier's stuff, but what little I've had was extremely impressive. I actually sold my Apex Glacier and iBasso D6 w/ upgraded opamps because the PCSTEP sounded better and the D-Zero was more portable, greatly reducing the utility of the Glacier and D6 for me. I get the impression that if he put a little more effort into promoting his products, they would be exponentially more popular here. As an aside, I didn't realize until I was reading over some specs on the new m905 monitor controller that Grace Design had licensed Meier's crossfeed circuitry. Pretty cool IMO.

To bring this back on topic: any other amps or amp manufacturers you guys feel match up particularly well with Beyers?

Yep, if my experience with the Jazz is any indication, the classic/daccord combo will really make the T1s sing.

Also, for anyone who is looking to join the Tesla lovers club (lol), Meier Audio is a great way to get the T1s and T5Ps at a great price...he's always got great package deals going on.

Having owned a Stepdance at one point I would imagine the Meier sound would be a wonderful match for the Tesla's. In fact for Solid State Meier and for tubes, well, My Analog Squared Paper is just sublime!

Other than Meier Audio, The Fostex HP-P1 works very well with the T5p, I'm not sure why. I like valve equipment, the A2P TU-05b looks like a superb match, once the HP-V1 is released it will be decision making time.

I know I am biased owning the TU-05 but I have to say so far of all the amps I have listened to with the T5P this one has for me the best synergy. It is not a bass heavy amp but what bass there is is very textured and detailed and one can forgive the missing lower octaves. Having said that I have yet to have anyone listen to the combination and feel left wanting in the bass department.

What is missing on paper does not necessarily mean one misses it when listening. What this amp brings to the T5P's table is soundstage, crystaline, detailed and yet smooth treble, mids are, well, it is a corny expression I must admit but so true in this instance, creamy.

Get a vocal, anyone from Willie Nelson to Bridgette Nielsen and you get a palpable feeling of that artist living and singing inside your head (or depending on the recording, slightly out in front!)

The Tesla's make this amp shine like no other headphone other than my FAD Piano Forte's.

Unfortunately though the T1's are too heavy a load for it so keep to the lower impedance Tesla's with it.

Hi I'm a heavy user of the T1, I bought it 3 years ago (maybe more) with a Meier Stage Dac and a Concerto (I had a very great deal for the set and It was a pleasure dealing with Jan Meier). I enjoy this setting like 5h a day for all this time, really love it and didn't feel the need to upgrade anything until I heard the HD800+HDVD800. But I'm still not sure it will be as versatile as my actual gear. The T1 handle so well everything I put in to.

Nice! I've read countless reports from users who pair Jan's gear with the T1s, and I think every single one has been positive. I know there is a little more that my T1s have to offer, but I'm not able to hear it with the gear I currently have. I have found that I tend to love the Wolfson DAC chips, and Jan uses that in his current DAC (and probably previous DACs, but not sure). Sounds like the Meier/T1 combo has realy stood the test of time with you! Seems like you rarely hear from those who settled on gear they love and havent made changes for a long time. That's what Im looking for, as well. I imagine I'll have the T1/Meier combo for the next few years if not longer. Once I find something that ticks all the boxes, I just forget about upgrades and enjoy the fruits of my labor! :)

Man, you guys have only whetted my appetite to hear what a full-sized Meier amp could do with my T5p... Damn you all tongue.gif.

And although I'd heard mention of the Analog Squared Paper amps before, I never looked them up until mentioned here. Pretty interesting little suckers!! I think I'm getting over my initial love of tube amps, but those look intriguing enough that I might keep an eye out for a deal on one ;)

You might have trouble with a deal on the ASP amps, to date only 19 have been made (mine is number 10) and there is a waiting list I think at the moment of three months. Each one is Bespoke made by one man.

Also, though portable it would be best to think of it as a really high quality desktop/home headphone amp with the advantage of battery power so no nasty mains electricity to grain up the sound.
