The magazine is around 50 years old - the new "writing style", etc. gets increasingly abstract, ("pop") there is so much blather (sometimes a full page) before getting to the grits of the piece of gear or topic.

I agree with the blather statement...although some of it is humorous. Definitely not entirely written by old men with beards. I usually read Bitran's posts as they usually guarantee a laugh. Here's an except from Bitran's review of some iems (great example of blather):

"Rodrigo delivered rock star poses, propping his right foot on his stage monitor and offering his pick in the air as a sacrifice to the guitar gods. His SG and gracious demeanor echoed of Santana. Unfortunately, during Rodrigo’s posturing, the four hits of acid I had taken only 30 minutes ago starting coming on way too strong, and Rodrigo’s head began zooming in and out of my line of vision while the thousands of light bulbs in the rear set-piece swirled together. All this time, the piercing oranges and purples of the dusk skyline mocked me: “Have you ever seen so many colors before?” I had to get the hell out of there."

I was actually at the Rodrigo y Gabrielle concert he's describing....still what this has to do with headphones I don't know. I guess you can only say so much about this piece of equipment or that piece and have to add some spice?

They look like something out of a bad acid trip.

I did not see either of these headphones in the recommended components in any class.  Are you saying I missed something.  The skull candy may get in next years, but I sincerely doubt the beats does.  If they do, I concede your point about the fact it was stupid to write a review.

Well to be fair their reviews of the Skullcandy and Beats seemed pretty accurate. Personally I've never found Beats to be fashionable in any way, but the Aviators in black look okay. I just don't see the need for these fashion headphones when companies like V-Moda and Sennheiser are making great looking, portable, closed-back headphones. I suppose we have them to thank for starting the trend, but with gorgeous headphones like the Momentum coming out now, I think they're no longer needed. Stereophile can review whatever they want to, but it'd be nice to see them consider reviewing good sounding, and good looking headphones when talking about fashion, instead of Beats by Dre and Skullcandy headphones.

It's garbage - any way I look at it.

Beginning with, The Cover - (upper left silver emblem)

"Ear Alert: Sexy Hi-End 'Phones"

.............................

Is there a decent stereo magazine in print?

Was very bored today and trying to waste time. Went into Best Buy and slowly compared very many audio products to stuff I own or have heard. They have some things I would have like a Samsung tube speaker system with iPod dock that was overpriced like most of the stuff there. It sounded good. Also listened to the headphones. Many didn't work right or at all. The DNA were horrible:frowning2:... The old school brands, like Sony, sennheiser, Koss were not working. Looked at the SkullCandy with the pictures of skateboarders wearing them and thought they looked ugly and cheap. Tried some 50 and 100 dollar candies and wasn't hearing clarity at all. Put on the aviators and was very surprised, best one of the working headphones they had. Bass wasn't huge, but at least they have decent sound. I have hd600 and he5le, and would never waste 150 on the aviators. But I would use them if I got them free, maybe while I'm sleeping or something. They really did sound good. I just had to get that off my chest.
