The AKG K712 Pro Support and Impressions Thread - Page 206

I have a somewhat urgent question for everyone who has owned this can.  I recently purchased these headphones and have been very pleased with their sound, but notice that I can make the really deep bass distort horrifically with a few songs.  Has anyone else had this issue, or do I have lemon?  I'm definitely thinking about returning them, but need to find out if this is a normal issue and whether I should re-purchase them, or move on to something like the HD650's. I only have a few days left in my return window...

The tracks that cause the issue include:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2IlehSR5zM

and

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_soLG38kJak

(Distortion around 00:40 through 00:50.... and yes, the distortion comes through even with the youtube video.)

Feedback would be really appreciated! If this is the norm AKG has got some problems. My NAD HP50's have no distortion problems at all with these tracks.

I will test those tracks with my Annie tomorrow but when I boost the bass of my Annie using EQ, it does distorts a little but only when I turn it max high

I have listened to AKG712 today and quite liked the sound stage on them. It felt much more precise compared to Philips X1. Vocal also seemed a tad closer and mids overall had bigger resolution. These are a few things I really would like to have in a next headphones.

But ... AKGs are open and I need closed. Was thinking about TH600 but I need good isolation.

Can someone share a quick comparison with MrSpeakers Alpha Dogs? AD are double price of 712 and triple price of X1. I have to buy blindly so I hope it would be an upgrade ... I will keep X1 - they are good for variety of genres, especially for funk (here 712 felt a bit short), acid jazz and similar.

I would need another pair more suitable for acoustic music - jazz and classical in particular. I hope AD would do well here.

Played it right from my iPhone 5S with my K712, since I was away from my main rig, but even underpowered I didn't hear any distortion.

The Alpha Dog is amazing. As far as closed headphones go, those are my top recommendation. Easily.

Wow! Came here to report the same issue. It's only in one ear for me, the other one is fine. Did NOT have this from day one, but only after 2-3 weeks of usage (I have them for a month in total). The distortion resembles the driver hitting some thin wire behind it, or something of that sort (you just can't hear that on higher frequencies, I guess). I really don't want to return them - the RMA will take forever (bought them in Italy, shipped to Latvia). Would be great to know if there's anybody else experiencing this problem.

Big thanks to everyone who provided feedback regarding the distortion issue.  I have decided to return my K712's to Amazon while I have the chance.  In addition to the bass rattle (which sounds a bit like the infamous grado-rattle) I have also heard what I think is some treble distortion.  I know there's a difference between "harshness" and distortion and I am pretty sure I have been able to make out some other distortion characteristics in the sound-sig.  This definitely makes me really appreciate the engineering that went into making the practically perfect distortion measurements for my NAD VISO HP50's (and they are closed cans!).

Perhaps these issues are just with my pair of cans but I am probably going to try a different manufacturer after these issues.  It's a shame really... the K712's did a LOT right sound-wise and were very comfortable.  Planned on making them a permanent fixture for my set up, but alas it was not meant to be.  Everything that takes place, for good or for naught, adds to your experience though, so with that in mind I am glad that I was able to own these headphones if only for a few brief moments.

was checking the measurements data at innerfidelity for the Nth time, but only now realized that...

the k701 and especially the k712 are harder to drive than the LCD2 classic !!! like 2x harder ! probably causing them to be much brighter, than they already are, on amps that are not really beefy !?! hopefully my conductor will be enough

New reformation,
That "wire" you think you hear and the rattle is probably from a hair or something. You can totally do whatever you want, but your experience with a problem is rare and covered by AKG warranty (if not even easier to fix with a personal inspection), and it's an extreme reaction to swear off an entire brand. Especially since you liked the headphone.

I do believe it was "jeremejevs" who suggested the driver hitting a wire being the culprit. One of the first things I thought when I noticed the rattle was that a hair had worked its way next to the driver.  I removed the pads and surprisingly found nothing of consequence. It actually sounds like the housing is not properly damped or something. These are hand-made headphones after all and perhaps I received a less than earnestly constructed one.

I am definitely not going to be bombastically seething in a hatred for everything AKG in the future...  I am not going to argue that no one should ever buy from AKG, I am just personally thinking about looking elsewhere. Even though I was somewhat impressed, I wasn't "blown away" and the QC issue gives me an extra push away from the brand.

I was really expecting a level of quality above what the K712's delivered (ignoring for a moment the production defect) and now I am faced with the tough quest to find something that can fill the gap.  There really aren't too many intelligent options in the $400 range.  Besides the HD600/HD650 and the HE-500 I don't have many other convincing alternatives.
