Ok, now swap the pads between them and give your impressions.

Most people say that until they switch the pads from the Q701 pads to either the K702/65 or the K712 pads. From what I've seen, the pads make the biggest difference. I agree with MLE. Switch the pads and see.

How does one obtain a K712pro headphone pads? I have a Q701, and wouldn't mind to try them with the 712 pads. I did some search but wasn't much of a success. Thanks.

I've never heard from one person who claimed they couldn't tell the difference between the two. Not to be a jerk, but if they can't I would take all their reviews with a huge grain of salt. Sorry!

You could probably get them to sound similar if both (or just one) was under-driven.

I also agree the K712 is more comfortable (not due to headband only). I'm glad K712 finally figured a way to have their memory foams NOT go flat like they do on the old Annie.

Believe it or not I found the K712 to sound more like a K702 with memory foam pads. That's NOT a bad thing.

The modded Q701 I have had smoother upper mids than the K712(!!).

I never understood this idea that the K712 smoothed over harsh material with upper mid peaks and lots of treble.

I would even go so far as saying the K712 has more treble than the modded Q701.

You should bass mod the Q701. When you do that they're extremely similar. The K712 still has very slightly more fuller low mids. I hope you have some amazing hearing because it's subtle.

IF I didn't have a modded Q701 I might have upgraded to the K712 (maybe). I probably would compare both the stock Q701 and K712 for a month and sell the loser.

Modded Q701 is such as steal at around $200-$225.

I do not know because I am not familiar with the 712s. But being a long time fan and owner of the k701s what headphone amp are you using?

The akgs 701 and 702s share a similar sonic balance. The 701 and 702s are fairly demanding of the driving amplifier powering them . They are very capable with the right amp driving them . I have strayed from using them at times but I keep going back to them. I have lcd 2 v2s but while the audezes have very smooth sonics I find that their soundstage reproduction is not all that great. When I want to hear soundstage I find that the akg 701 is vastly better at soundstage reproduction than the lcd 2 v2s.

Of the headphone amps I have I like the ray samuels raptor otl with it the sound is quite palpable with the k701s .The akg 701/702 headphones are quite amazing sounding with the right headphone amp driving them .And at the price you can get them at I think they are a astounding bargain .

How do they compare to the DT-990s and HD 558 in sound, and comfort? I have been thinking about buying a 2nd pair of headphones in the future, and I have taken an interest in this pair.

I think they sound better than both the DT 990 and HD 558 as well as having a higher level of comfort. The K712 is the most comfortable headphone I have owned.

I would describe the k712 the same way. so no, I don't think so..

has anyone put a black dragon v2 cable on the k712s? I'm worried about having way too much bass. it's already a little heavy for me

The only way to fully fix the harsh and sibilant vocals on the K702, Q701, K712, K612, etc. is to pair them with a system they have good synergy with, they are picky headphones. They are not like the HD 600 family which seem to have smooth vocals on just about any system.

There is no harsh vocals on my Q701, driven by HRT microstreamer[DAC] and a Bellari HA 540 amp.

Nice, comfort is a big priority for me especially with my buzzed/shaved head. I heard the leather band is pretty soft.

Now, the sibilance of the DT-990s has to be its biggest weakness for me. Does the Akg k712 have similar peaking highs?

HMMMM, yea i dont want to give up my DAC for these headphones its not worth it to me as i like the HD 600's better, but i would like to keep these.
