Some people still seem to think it sounds exactly like the Q701 (or K70x, whatever...) but with 3dB bass added.

It doesn't.

I think the Annie is great, but I think I would love it even more if it truly were a Q701 + 3dB bass as advertised. I want my sparkly goodness.

EQ would indeed introduce distortion - that is by changing (distorting) the original frequency response. Then again, the phones were distorting in that way to begin with unless they had a flat response.

Straight out of the "best sci-fi collection" book. :P

K702 has plenty of bass, for god sakes the headphone is flat in frequency response from 40-10k hz (+-3 db). It's got plenty of punch and a perfect amount of bass presence, as in, realistic amounts of bass.

Yes. Not a basshead's dream but perhaps a neutral head's dream. I agree with the above description ^ ^ and that's what I like about my K701s.

The K 701 I've got have several dB of extra bass bloat and very many extra dB in the treble.

Well, glad it's the "best of sci-fi collection" book and not the "worst of sci-fi collection" book. :P

While I'm not a basshead either (quite the opposite, in fact... cannot stand bass at all unless it's really accurate), the bass seems understated unless driven by a warmer source. I'd argue that it actually compensates rather well for the overdriven bass of lower-end, cheapo basshead sources, but when used with a more neutral source, you can barely feel it most of the time.

Compared to what though? I highly doubt I can afford to improve on the neutrality of my K701s within the constraints of my budget.

The Yamaha HP-50, for instance. They cost about $30 used.

I see AKG has decided to continue to try to milk their aging flagship.

Is a vintage ortho-dynamic and a modern dynamic-driver really all that comparable side by side?

First is the K 701, then the (modded) HP-50. You'd think it should be the other way around, but no.

Those graphs are not even remotely similar. Look at the differences in FR before decay.

Something tells me Vid might not be buying the K712 Pro.

Me either for that matter but I still like my K701's no matter what graphs you throw at me. :)

I personally like the look of K701 the most... I was always thinking about getting a pair of K701 since it should have the best soundstage width I guess? At least this is what I think based on comments that each revision increased bass and decreased treble. (haven't had a chance to compare)

If you've not heard better, you can be happy that they're the best.

That's the point.
