I bought the K712 thinking it was an upgrade from my Q701 bringing things closer to HD800.  I was disappointed so I returned it.  What a subjective hobby.  :D

Does that imply that you recommend as well the HE-500?

So as an owner of both, which one do you think is superior in sound quality?

First of all, as i said sound is very subjective and personal.  In my case, I own both q701 and HE500 so I'll make it simple.  If you already have Q701, don't waste your money.  Keep your Q701, do the bass port mod.  With the money you saved, buy a used HE500 for about $500 - $600.  It will blow your socks off with a decent amp IF you are into lively, energetic type of sound from HPs.  Above all, you WILL physically feel the air moving on your ear drums with the HE500.  I keep the HE500 at home cause of the amp requirement.  modded Q701 is at the office.  They get equally head time from me daily.  On weekend, of course, the HE500 will get it all.

HE500 vs K712?  $ aside here, I'll pick HE500 for being a much more rounded pair of HPs, better bass, lusher mid/vocal, great high.  You just feel more with HE500.

K712 is very accurate.  For some people, high could be a touch harsh for some music genres and bad recordings.  It is better relatively to Q701 because it has a touch more bass so the high got balanced out a bit, IMO.  Mid is of course awesome, same as in Q701 though.

If the Q701 has never been made and the only option is K712 then of course, I'll would buy K712 but also buy HE500.  I enjoy both sound signatures equally for different types of music I listen to.

If you only can own 1 pair, then I think at least for me, the choice would be HE500.

I am not here to dis K712 in anyway.  I love AKG sound signature and especially their design.  I am just here to offer my honest opinion/experience about the 3 HPs.  I also don't like what AKG is doing with these different models while not offering customers a clear upgrade.  I will buy if they come out with something on the level of HD800.  I am just an AKG fan from my days of pro-audio and recording.

Since I brought up HD800.  IMO, Q701 = 80 - 83% of HD800 in terms of SQ.   K712 will be right at the 83-85% or so mark.  In audio, you pay a lot more for the last 15%.   HD800 owners might not agree here but it's my opinion.  And yes, I've listened to HD800 vs Q701 quite a bit driven by a great tube amp.

Yes, I tried this combo with my Q701 at the recent CA meet. Plenty of headroom so K712 should be just fine also.

I am enjoying these quite a bit.

Any chance to see anyone here kind enough to measure the size of the K712 Pro earcups? is it bigger/smaller or "=" to the K550?

Billson :)

I have also owned the he500. I compared it to my bassport modded k701 via my audio gd compass 2 and did not find the he500(velours) to be superior in any way, just different, not as fast as the k701 and not more extended or powerfull in the bass than the k701. The he500 sounds slower and smoother and somewhat more pleasing due to not so pronounced highs, but not technically better. Of course the he500 wins at extreme volumes, but I don't think that's because the k701 is inferior qualitywise, that has something to do with the big ortho drivers. The he500 had to go since it didn't really give me anything the k's couldn't also do.

Just out of curiosity, what amp did you use to drive the HE500 when you still had it?

The audio gd compass 2. Btw the k701 and the he500 are equally hard to drive... well traditionally... but not hard for the compass 2 ;-)

was that refering to distortion or  because the highs are more tamed?

I think he was basically saying that orthos just handle very high volumes better than dynamics do. I could be wrong though.

Apparently orthos don't have the improved transparency and accuracy that electrostats have? I was kind of assuming they did, at least somewhat, but apparently not because if they did I don't see how anyone out there could claim they are no better than a dynamic headphone, regardless of which one you're comparing them to. The Stax I demo'ed had an accuracy about them that dynamics are simply incapable of. Its kind of a bummer that orthos apparently aren't the same way.
