The AKG K712 Pro Support and Appreciation Thread - Page 80

I have to say that I'm still a bit confused by those Headroom graphs of the K712. Seems too good to be true. I hope they (or Tyll?) gets a chance to measure K702 65th Anniversary as well.

I do wish it was possible to order some K712 pads and be 100% sure i'm getting K712 pads and not the flatter Annie pads (that I already have).

K712 Pro with two types of pads included is a great idea IMO! There is no way they cost AKG that much to make.

Ugh, I wonder what pleather/leather pads would sound like on the K702/Q701. Probably awful.

Not sure about the anniversary pads, but the K712 pads are stiffer than the Q701 pads so perhaps that is a why to identify them?  The K712 pro pads have a black ring around the inside where the clips are found while the Q701 are lighter.

I think Tyll should measure them as their graph should be a little different from the other K70x.  I think he should measure a 702, a 701 (recent or Q), and a 712.

K712 pads shouldn't be stiffer than Q701 pads, it should be the opposite.

K712 and Anniversary pads are both memory foam.  When you squeeze them they will be slower to return to shape.  Q701 uses spring foam which instantly springs back into shape.  It's also angled unlike the memory foam pads.

Both memory foam pads share the same part number, and the Q701 and K702 share the same part number for their black spring foam angled pads.

I guess the question is which pads will we get (thick or thin) when ordering them from akg with the same part number. I wouldnt mind having those thicker pads for my AEs.

Chico, you mentioned that you prefer the sound you get from AEs with thicker pads, right? I remember you saying they sounded almost as open aa the Qs while keeping that warm sig. Does the bass get pushed back much?

I bought my K712's weeks ago for $400 on the Mad Dog web site. I own both the Q701 and the 712. Prior to buying the Q model I had the original K702. When the Q's first arrived, I did extensive comparisons between the two, and the Q sounded better. I gave my 702's to my son. Now comparing the Q to the 712, it's not even close. The bass issues with the earlier models has been fixed, and the 712 provides solid bass with good detail. The mids on vocals sound spot on. The treble is smooth and extended. The overall sound is dynamic and full, and sounds better than my other 700 series phones. I've also been jumping between the 712 and the HD800. The 800 sounds a little cleaner, but can't match the punch of the 712.
Head to head, I preferred the 712 on most of the CDs I've played. I don't know if this big of a difference in sound quality is only attributable to different pads. That seems a little hard to believe. I'm sure it has had some impact, but you should try to hear these if you can.

Yes.

And no, the bass doesn't get affected much.

Hmm...now I'm preferring the K712 over the Anniversary...

You can check the part number of the drivers for yourself, and see if the 712's drives number is the same as the other K70x series.

So it looks like despite all the constant complaints about AKG not doing much, they DO keep improving somewhat.

True.

Although an actual NEW headphone from them would be nice too.  popcorn.gif

Kinda leaves open the question of what is improvement - in other words, what is the goal.

I don't think akg has figured out what sounds neutral yet :D Anyway, I am going for the k612s myself. I'll probably be getting them in a month.
