Strange choice.  The K601 is a different headphone than the x70x.  Just because it's AKG and starts with "K" doesn't mean it will sound like a budget K701 or anything.

They should still be decent though, but I would have gone with Q701.  And the ODAC for gaming?  I don't get that, but whatever.

BTW, IMO all these AKG gaming questions from newish members who are clearly reference MLE's guide should post them in THAT thread, instead of posting them in the K712 or anniversary threads and derailing them a little.

Are dolbyheadphone tricks and things like that  an absolute need for gaming ? I dont think so ^^ , not all games beneficits from dolbything etc . I don't like the sound of game with dolby or cmss 3d from creative , sound become like plastiky/metalic + echo and fake . I prefer to loose a bit of positionning for a more "real sound" .

Playing music with dolby on , urrg , but for games for me it's the same i don't like this kind of "processing" that alter that much the sound .

Playing music with Dolby. Obviously doing it wrong.

And you can sacrifice your positioning, while I continue to get the upper hand because of so called dolbything. :)

Guess who I am? And guess why I do as well as I do? This is a prime example why Dolby Headphone is a definite must have. Plain stereo gives you mostly linear sound cues with extreme left and right sound cues and everything in between. Dolby Headphone places sounds around you, and in time, becomes absolute second nature. Sound is more often than not, more important than actual sight. When you can kill 3 people in a room by shooting through the wall accurately, DH is doing it's thing.

I'm sure there are many people who agreee with you on not using it, and I'm sure it's the main reason why they consistently stay below me on the leaderboards, and keep being sent messages calling me a hacker/cheater.

If more people used DH with a solid pair of cans, I wouldn't be as dominant.

Believe me, use a pair of good headphones and DH (properly set up, which might be quite hard to do on PC) for at a few weeks without playing in stereo. Then go back to stereo and tell me is every bit as good as DH. Raw fidelity, sure. Accurate sound placement, immersion, I think not. It's like putting blinders on. I may as well be playing without looking at the screen.

You really should post your impressions on the guide, and not here, as this is the K712 thread, not the dolbything thread.

I can't believe the importance of virtual surround is even contested in the context of competitive gaming. Without it, there is a huge gap between the left and right channels that you'd have to be near-deaf to miss.

Anyway, anyone surprised that the K702-65th is still stocked this far after the K712 has been announced? I'm hoping the K712 is released while K702-65th stocks are still available; hopefully that would mean close-out discounts for the latter model to clear stock. $300 is my buy-point for the Annie.

How is that possible? All onboard soundcards sound just as good as dedicated! Amirite? I should be able to pwn you with my Via VT2020S! If you win you're a hacker!

When are the K612 and K712 due to be released? I'm interested to see if they stack up against my K400 which is the AKG I've owned the longest. Maybe they finally started tuning their K701 clones to bring back the musicality and lush mids.

They already did that with the Q701, which is a slightly improved K702.

I really don't know what's so special about the K400 or K501. I think they're kind of overrated. Better than the K701 at least.

Oh and AKG replied to me on Facebook. The K612 doesn't use the memory foam pads. Didn't expect that for it's price.

Too bad you don't have access to some 65th pads, they sound really good on the K400. I think I like it better than stock, but you lose out on some treble and the soundstage is reduced.
It's a bit warmer and slightly more muffled though.

EDIT: Oh and but I think the K400 sounds better than the K701 Anniversary, but not the Q701. I think I prefer the K601 to the K400 though possibly. That's with stock K400 pads. I prefer the K400 with K702 or Annie pads.

The only reason my K400 has remained is because of it's synergy with acoustic and jazz music.  I've owned the K601, K702, K500, K340, K271 and K1000, all of which are great in some respects but all ended up going because I found other headphones which did something better or sounded better with the various amps I've owned.  I'm willing to try the K712 or K612 and I like minimalist looks of the K612 in particular which remind me of the K400/K500 black and grey coloring.  K240DF is another AKG which I have found to be unsurpassed in certain areas, namely the natural and balanced sound field with great detail.  I did alot of A/B testing with my HD800 and K240DF and found the two had alot in common aside from the size of the soundstage.

I got a part number from Hifiguy(add some numbers here) over on Audiokarma for the memory foam pads. When I have the extra $70-$80 to blow I was going to order the memory foam pads for my K701s directly from AKG's parts department.

The information on the pads is also in the K702 Anniversary thread.  Several people ordered pads there.

The K712 Pros aren't even out yet, but this thread has gone off the tracks already - much like its cousin thread from about a week or two, AKG K702 65th Anniversary.

Yes, very much so !

Its interesting that the K712 is 62 ohms and the K612 is 120ohms similar to the older AKG models.  Maybe the K612 will share some qualities of the K501 and others which are also 120ohms.

It's exactly the same specs as the old K601 that you had . not K501 .  A K601 with a slightly different color scheme .

Yup. The K601 was actually a really good headphone. The people that like the K702 anniversary edition would probably really have enjoyed it. Super warm headphone overall. I'll be very interested to see how the K612 sounds in comparison to the K601, or if it's just recoloring of the plastic.

I am a long time fan of the AKG soundhouse, so it was a good news for me that AKG made their move and poped out new models, so I thought I will post my 2$ about them.

I don't know what is going on with K272HD rebranding into K273 PRO. It really seems to be an attempt to create up-to-date line of professional-oriented products for studio purposes. Unless there won't be a proper price and changed sound signature or maybe additional sets of pads etc. in the box (and I believe stopping production of K271 MKII?) I see no point in offering K273 PRO. Personally.

K612 PRO on the other hand seems to be just K601 cleaned from dust and offered as "K601 fully made in China" with more "pro" color scheme and in good price. I personally won't expect a revolution here. The only revolution will be problably in FS threads, where used K601 are currently more expensive than upcoming K612 PRO being new.

Finally K712 PRO seems to be a mass produced Anniversary K702 at this point. Nothing more but nothing less, so the upcoming time is going to be very exciting for some people I believe :). I personally expect them to sound 1:1 with Annies, but who knows, I won't be the guy to check it out - in Poland K712 PRO (and Annies) are unavailable now and I don't think this will change. The only way to get them is to order them from mentioned here Thomman (Germany, fortunately transport fee is 0 with such expensive headphones).

If someone already have for example Q701 and want to apply some sound changes, probably it could be wise to just sit and play with for example back of the drivers of his K/Q701 to gain some bass (covering few of the driver holes etc.). It probably won't be the same sound signature but at least one step closer I believe.

As for Europe (and if we take all changes mentioned in this model), the price of K712 is making them overpriced for me, at least for now. Price drop = no problem. The drivers used in 700 series are in my opinion really good and capable enough to reveal some more potential when implemented and tuned correctly.
