ATH AD700. I had both the k702 and the ad700. For competitive gaming the ad700 edges out the k702.

HD598. And don't pay attention to "surround headsets".

Im also learning about the "X" series of audio technica, if they are as good as the first versions they can be ideal for your intended usage as well.

The DT990, Pro2900 are amazing for imaging alone and offers great sopundquality.

I have a pair of DT770 pro 80's, and they actually work surprisingly well. Sure they are closed, but their soundstage is only one beat short of the DT880 and they have incredible bass. If you intend to use these with a soundcard for the surround, then its cool since they are easy to drive (80 ohm). Only thing though is to make sure you have a source with a low output impedance.

Just food for thought.

I think robust, rich bass is detrimental for competitive gaming.

Strong bass response will distract you from subtle cues. Bass dominates for immersion though.
