Hi i'm new here i've been looking around for headphone information and this looked like a great place to get information and preferences. I just bought a cheap pair of headphones but they distort at higher levels and they are falling apart on me so i am looking for another pair yet again.
I am an engineer and am building headphone amplifiers so i would like to get a good pair that would run nicely off an amp. I like bass, i listen to techno and rap and such. The real problem is my price range, i only want to spend up to $60 on a new pair of headphones. So far i have looked at Ariel 7 Tanks but it looks like they are pretty cheap headphones and i could get better. I like beats but they are way too much. I also looked at the Koss djpro100 and audio technicas of simular price but they don't seem like they would need an amp.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank You.

ATH-M35/ATH-M30 in that price range. I own the ATH-M35 and they benefit from amping, but they might not have enough bass for you.

Sony MDR-XB500. I don't own them, and I don't think they'll respond well to amping, but they seem popular among people that like bass.

I guess you're new here, but Beats by Dre are known as THE worst brand/product line especially for the price by all users on Head-Fi (if anyone objects, I will edit this comment to say otherwise). No offense, but the fact that you mentioned Beats might heavily influence the amount of responses you get from users here.

Have you considered getting supra-aural instead of circumaural headphones coz I just have to say it - JVC HA-S500. They just fit your budget and you won't get anything better sound-wise for that money. And with a good amp you can push them quite loud before any distortion. They do benefit from an amp even though they are not the hardest to drive but honestly for you budget you won't be able to get a full-size high impedance cans to try to push your amps to the limit.

I completely understand that beats by dre suck, however i'm impressed with the fit of them and they have decent sounds. If they happened to be in the $40 price range i would surely get them but they are no where near the quality or a pair or grados or audio technicas. That being said what does everyone think of the skullcandy hesh headphones? not asking as a full question but those headphones are sold by crazy numbers and i am not impressed.

I was acually quite interested in these, however being a japenese import i feel like they would be harder to get my hands on. Any other people want to vouch for them and whether or not they could handle being pushed by an amp.

I was just reading another thread and remembered the Koss PortaPro. I haven't heard them either, but they are a budget-friendly classic here.

The DJ100's don't need an amp, but they definitely respond to amping. I think those would work well for you.

The Beats and Skullcandies are known for being substandard for the price. The sound aside, one of the biggest issues I have with them is their durability. The Beats tend to develop issues very quickly, and Skullcandy products have issues as well, usually relating to the cable.

I ordered the JVC S-500 and received them today. I am very happy with them, only thing that i didn't realize is that they aren't over-ear they are on-ear headphones. They sound really good and can't wait till i get the problems with my headphones resolved so i can try them with the amp.
