Gray - If you like the Taurus out of the box you are in for a very pleasant surprise after a few days of burn in. You are right, the balance approach will give you much more gain through the xlr output. You can switch on the fly between standard and balanced with the xlr but you will still find the gain much higher than the trs se ouput. I think the xlr sounds the best. Give it two days and then you will find it opens up to a massive sound stage and the tonal quality smooths out. Biggest change I ever heard during burn in of any component. It just keeps getting better.

True that, out of the box I thought bass was a bit on a loose side.

Hey guys,

Went to audition the Vega Dac today to put in my home hifi system and thought while I was there I should check out the Taurus Mk II paired with it and brought along my HD800's.

So first up was the vega vs the nad m51 vs my current dac (arcam rdac). Testing the speaker system first

So the Nad was better than the arcam, but not by a huge margin, I don't think I would have upgraded. Then we plugged in the Vega and had an a/b switch. Wow! It was like someone turned on a detail and sound stage button! A/bing back to the m51 was a huge step down. like someone shrunk the room and suddenly made the image much more blurred. The arcam then did this to an even larger extent.

Just amazing how much more detail the vega was pulling out.I won't go into listening details but It was not a close comparison with either the m51 or arcam.

Then I made a big mistake.....I plugged in the Taurus mk II and my hd 800s.....The dac was the vega.

At the moment I just have the centrance hifim8 driving my hd800's and have been quite happy with this setup and use it mostly at work. I then plugged into the Taurus and A/B's vs the Burson Soloist. First was single ended, it was clear the taurus was better...had a much fuller sound across the board. Extended bass and treble, more detail, and soundstage was a bit better. But it wasn't a huge difference.

We then went fully balanced with the Sennheiser balanced cable for the hd800's and ran balanced from the vega to the taurus.

Now I was actually returning the cable to the shop who had given it to me to audition with my hifi m8. Honestly while there were differences between balanced and single ended it wasn't really clear whether it was a good difference. I just felt like it was a small moving of the top end to the mids, no real difference in sound stage or bass etc.

So then I wasn't expecting much on the taurus......wow was I wrong. It blew me away....absolutely amazing. There aren't enough adjectives to describe it.

Unfortunately it meant that I can't go back now. The hifim8 is great. The soloist is also great. But man the fully balanced Taurus is end game for me. I haven't listened to alot of head fi but know my way around hifi speaker systems, and this is a system i'm happy to turn on as an alternative.

my current Primaluna classic > magnepan 1.7's are no slouch. But i'll be hard pressed to choose between which of the two systems to listen to.....Just that amazing.

So if you aren't running fully balanced with your vega/taurus i can recommend it. It definitely won me over (even when i was returning the cable)

Oh and a song to check out to audition this....

Doug Macleod - My black Pony from Whose Truth, Whose LIes?

Wow...just wow.....

I cam home and plugged back in my hifim8 and =( well it still sounds amazing but its definitely not in the same league.  Don't get me wrong for a portable amp the hifim8 is amazing!

Anyway thought I'd share my excitement....Will be joining you soon as an Auralic owner.

Nice impressions, Dave. Reading all the reviews and impressions and having a pair of HD800 coming my way, I'm looking at the Taurus as an end game amp for me, too. I don't think there's a dealer where I live so I can't audition, but I'll trust all the reviews.

Hey Kugino, while I can't tell you how it compares with other end game type amp setups for the hd800 (liquid glass, gsx dark star etc). My limited experience thinks it can't get much better than this....just different.

If you can I would see if you can run it balanced with a balanced source.. It really was a big big difference....and I was super skeptical of it making a big change from my experience with the hifi m8. Actually reading the m8 forum I see that others have found the same as me regarding going balanced i.e. not a huge difference.

For me this combo feels like the Ferrari or Maclaren p1 of hifi for me.

Wish there were more head fi meets in europe.....love this hobby!

I plan on running it with a balanced source. I sold my balanced opus and haven't yet found a replacement. I have a geek pulse x coming later this summer but am on the lookout for something else as well. Most of my headphones are already terminated with balanced plugs so I just need to find that source...

I'm picking up my Taurus MKII today, and look forward to enjoying my Ferrari rig (Vega/Taurus).  :L3000:

Kugino - Vega, no doubt about it. My brother has the MSB analog so i'll let you know how the vega compares.... =)

Santacore - Oh man so jealous! Enjoy and give us a write up of what you think....

You sure you need Taurus mk2? If not, I'll be happy to take it instead of you :P

Anyhow, enjoy!

I've already commented here that that Taurus is remarkable with my balanced HD800 but I just want to mention that it is also fantastic with my balanced T1's. This is no one trick pony. And yes, with this amp so far I am convinced that balanced is better. End game material for me. I haven't turned on my tube amps since the Taurus got a little burn in time.

alright, now you're just bragging.  no, seriously, though...how does the taurus do with low-impedance cans like grados and denons (some of my favorites). i have a yulong A28 that doesn't play nicely with low impedance headphones b/c of poor impedance matching. my main headphones i'll use with the taurus (as soon as i can find one) are balanced hd800 and d7000.

Sorry, I can't give any opinion on low impedance phones. I plan to add the HE560 when available since the weight reduction might make it comfortable enough for me to enjoy some of the HiFiman sound. It has been reported several times that the Taurus works great with planar/ortho's but they are purely resistive loads so not really an answer for your question.

I have had my Taurus running for a day now and I am convinced it sounds ten times better than it did out of the box...and I thought it sounded brilliant then!

I am listening to Daft Punks 'Da Funk' through my LCD-X's and I have never...I repeat never... had a headphone experience like it. This amp just powers the music forward with incredible force and energy.

My oh my ,what Bass is on display here...tight as a drum too.

I suddenly realised I had a huge grin on my face while I was listening.

Da Funk is a superb choice to play to display the amp...and the X's.... power and synergy together.

I need to go to bed...but I need to listen to some more!!
