I had the he-560s home for a spin and tested them together with my Taurus mkII. They sounded fantastic, no difficulties driving them.
However I must say I prefer the sound of the LCD 2F/MkII combo. They sound pretty similar to each other but when compared side to side the LCD 2F offer a bit more organic and warm sound. That is of course a matter of preference.
You will no doubt be very happy with the Taurus driving your he -560s!

though the "only speaker amps can adequately power the he6" fanatics will ardently disagree. while I am not one of those folks, i do find myself with volume at 1 or 2 o'clock under most he6 listening sessions.

I've enjoyed my HE-6 from a few headphone amps - my Taurus MKII, the Questyle CMA800R in monoblock configuration and from a fully upgraded WA5, but I have heard it better... from speaker amps. I hardly think that makes me a fanatic.

yep. I'm sure there are many amps that power the he6 better. I have a couple of tube monoblocks that sound pretty good with my he6...but I think the speaker amps fans are doing people a disservice when they claim that only speaker amps can power them adequately. you may not be one of them, but there are many around here who are.

As a Taurus owner I am going to respectfully disagree with that statement.

The Taurus will produce music from the HE6, but you are not getting what the HE6 can deliver when fully powered. It isn't a volume thing. It's a deep bass and visceral 'body' to the sound that the HE6 can deliver, but only when well powered. The Taurus is a great amp, but it just falls short of delivering what the HE6 needs to shine. The sound it delivers from the HE6 is flat and bass lite compared to what this headphone can deliver when fully amped.

I have two other amps that do drive the HE6 superbly - Simaudio 430HA and the WA5. Both deliver 8W with a beefy power supply. That is enough to give the HE6 what it needs to shine. I disagree with the folks that insist on powerful speaker amps for the HE6 - a powerful headphone amp like the 430HA or WA5 does the job just fine. I have hooked up my HE6 to my 150W power amp via a speaker tap harness - that was a waste of time and money - very little, if anything, was delivered beyond what I am already getting from the 430HA and WA5.

If you are buying an amp with the HE6 in mind as your primary headphone then I would suggest that the Taurus isn't the answer. The 430HA would be a much better choice for SS or WA5 for tube.

The HE6 is a great headphone when powered by the Taurus. It can be even better when powered by a better amp. Is it really more complicated than that?

I think it might be. The difference between a HE6 powered by a Taurus and a HE6 powered by a 430HA (for example) is not small or subtle to my ears - it is a big jump in performance. That special magic that the HE6 can deliver, particularly when modded, just isn't there from the Taurus for me.

If had to put a number to it (highly subjective I know) I would say that the Taurus delivers about 60% of what the HE6 is capable of, compared to what the 430HA or WA5 can deliver.

The Taurus can throw about 4W into the HE6 in balanced mode, against 8W for the other 2 amps mentioned. 4W just isn't enough for the HE6 to shine - 8W is.

None of this matters if you are happy with the HE6 + Taurus combination - go for it and enjoy

I think it has be stated many times that the Taurus is not optimal for the HE6. There are about a hundred other headphones that can be powered wonderfully by the Taurus. I don't get this obsession with the HE6. It is only one headphone. It is not the best pairing with the Taurus. We all agree now lets move on.

Excuse me - I have every right to state my views on the Taurus + HE6 combination in reply to another member.

"Move on" yourself.

I think it is wrong to rule out the HE-6 for the Taurus, just because there are even better amps. Let me elaborate:

1) The HE-6 is a great headphone with the Taurus. If you want to spend 1000-1500 USD on a heaphone for the Taurus the HE-6 might very well be a great choice. It depends on taste and preferences. It is a high end setup, even if there are even better amps. I'd rather spend the rest of my life with HE-6 an Taurus than a range of other highly praised combos.

2) The Taurus has been declared a great amp for the HE-6 by some rewievers. Granberg think it makes the HE-6 sound like a true flagship (here) Guttenberg thinks it clearly bests EF6 (here), both say it's the best they have heard with the HE-6. These opinions at least supports the notion that the HE-6/Taurus combo is good sounding, worth owning.

3) I have tried several powerful speaker amps in and above Taurus' price league, without getting a significantly better result than the Taurus. Other people I know have tried other (and highly expensive) speaker amps, without getting better results than the powerful headphone amps. A random powerful speaker amp is by no means necessarily better sounding than the Taurus.

4) There is no reason to doubt that the Woo WA5 is better. It is also way more expensive. I think the Master 9 is clearly better than the Taurus with the HE-6, but the Taurus was clearly better than the Mjolnir and the V200. Hey, I even think the HE-6 sounds pretty awsome with the WA22 - even if I know it's not optimal I enjoy it no the less.

5) There is no reason to doubt that certain speaker amps are superb with the HE-6. And some might be less expensive than the Taurus. But they are useless with other headphones.

6) All headphones are better with better amplifiers, but the HE-6 is more scalable than most headphones. Since they are power hugry, I think lots of people attribute enhanced percieved SQ with power, but lets not forget that there is more to it.

I am not ruling anything out - just putting forward the view that the HE6 with the Taurus is giving the listener a fraction of what the HE6 is capable of.

If the HE6 + Taurus combination makes you happy, then that is all that really matters - enjoy :)

The Taurus was my first 'serious' headphone amp. I still have it and it enjoy it. It drives anything wonderfully well except for the HE6. I didn't know how big the gap was until I purchased a WA5, and later the 430HA. Those extra few watts make all the difference and transform the HE6 into something beyond what the Taurus can do.

I am not sure that it is only the watts, you are comparing the Taurus with amps that are almost twice the price.

The Taurus is 1899 USD

The WA5 is minimum 3500 USD (+ 1200 for parts upgrade + 1500 for nice tubes , fastly passing 6000....)

The 430HA is 3500 USD

But I appreciate you sharing, you make WA5 increase its position on "my want to have"-list... :beerchug:

I just do not want people to think that HE-6 is a bad choice for the Taurus. Because it is not!

Actually, I doubt there are any good all round headphone amplifiers at or below Taurus' price point that actually drive the HE-6 better.

The joy of getting some 300B sonic goodness in your life

Point taken - these are are high end amps with high end price tags. The WA5 is particularly pricey if you factor in some high end tubes to put in it (which is the only way it can compete with the 430HA in my view, but that is a different topic for a different thread).

Ahhh - 300B... I deserve :dt880smile:

Just barely on topic - but since we are dicussion the power-needs og HE-6, these posts by Justin_Time is interesting, since he has tried many amps for the HE-6 and still find the 1 Watt EAR HP4 among the greater amps for HE-6:
