Headset purchase advice

Thread Starter

I'm just starting to get into headsets and could use advice.  I'm trying to self teach what to look for and how to translate specs into the actual affect that I get from the differences, but it would help a lot to have some straight up advice.  I've been looking into headsets and can't quite narrow it down.

On a purely comfort level, I can't enjoy the Astro A40's as the cup size is too small for my ears and they end up pinning them down.  Everywhere I go I hear bad things about Turtle Beach and Razor, although perhaps you feel differently.  I have also tried on, but was unable to get a sound demo, the Tritton 720+ and found that to be quite comfortable.  I saw one reviewer on here chastised the Pro+ with the actual 5.1 compared to the 720+ and virtual 7.1.  I was interested in the Sennheiser U320, but was disappointed to hear it was only stereo.

To get an idea of how noobish I am to headphones, I tried a pair of Sennheiser HD558s and that was the best I've ever heard.  So let that be a benchmark for my exposure to quality audio.  I'd appreciate any wisdom regarding the above headsets or others out there that I haven't considered as well as any preferred reading that I should go through.

Thanks

Gaming headsets has been overmarketed and overpriced for as long as I knew them. If you want the best price/performance ratio, get a 200 USD headphone and attach a mic

I was going to say the same thing but seem to have been beaten to it. Get a nice pair of headphones and a ModMic job done.

Btw I have the Beyerdynamic DT880 Premiums as my gaming headphones with a ModMic ;)
