SENNHEISER 598 VS. HIFIMAN 400

Have a pair of recabled (recently released oyaide cable) sennheiser 598 headphones with a nuforce udac2. Sounds pretty damn nice but I think I can do better. The bass improved (tighter more controlled) with the recable, but i feel like im still missing something. Clarity better imaging maybe? Or maybe im thinking the dynamic would be sub standard to the planar driver? Saw tons of comparisons between the HiFiMan 400 and the Senn 650s, but none about the 598s and the 400s. Anybody with thoughts/experiences???

Heya,

Quite different headphones. The HD598 is bright, focus is on mids & treble. Good imaging and sound stage. But it lacks body to me, it's mid bass and sub-bass are not really all that neutral to me, as they roll off as you go down. The HE400 is more neutral to me in the bass, because it doesn't just roll off, it just keeps traveling flat, way further with much more ability than the HD598, so it has that body that the HD598 lacks. Mids are out-standing. Treble is not overly bright, but not dark.

Very best,

Very best,

Don't forget that your opinions of HE400 are based on your revision 1 HE-400s. The current HE-400s are substantially brighter in the treble region.

are they still neutralish... a lot of sibilance or are the highs tiring?? Im looking into purchasing the He-400s mostly for ambient/psytrance/prog-alt rock/metal.  I was hoping they were neutral with great soundstage, fast, somewhat forgiving, and good bass response for an open...?

What you're missing is a better DAC and amp than udac2 which cant even come close to bringing the best out of HD598.
