Personally  I feel that Hifiman can do a better job by stating  the recommended IEMs or headphones for each of the available "Balance card".

Rather than the end users need to try all the cards for a specific IEM or headphone.

Just my 2 cents.

Just noticed the minibox card is now available at Hifiman's Taobao store  rolleyes.gif (RMB 1499)

AK120 is still my choice for on-the-go or in-flight usage for its size and battery life.

Too bad the 901 it cannot function as an USB DAC without the dock. Any chance they will add it via firmware? I think I read the "official" reason from Fang for this is the mini USB dock isn't capable for 24/192. Jamato did you get a chance to ask about this?

The vented case is actually already available in China (from ERJI.net):

Sorry if my question may sound a bit silly.

As I know this is not a CLASS A amp,

can we use the minituare Cooling Fan to carry away the heat generated from HM-901?

Will it affect the sound quality with this method?

No reason why not unless it generates an electromagnetic field, which isn't a good thing for audio.

I've asked the taobao seller some of them do hv hm901 in stock but shipping can be a problem as delivery can't handle anything has batteries.neither do I wanna risk $1400+ (8000 rmb) to declare false statement....troublesome

Some answers from HiFiMan customer service:

Quote:
The exact release date of HM-901 is unknown. Maybe at the end of this month. I don't know, but it won't be too long.
The max output of HM-901 is 9 mw at 36 Ohm.

Both standard and balanced modules are less than 1 ohm

HM-901 standard module is actually designed for IEMs. A higher grade IEM module will be available in 5 to 6 weeks.

Release date refers to Head-Direct international site.

The max output power must be the Standard amp card, I expect.

"Less than 1 Ohm" is regarding output impedance.

Yes, get the Balanced card, there is a switch on the upper left side near the 3.5mm Jack where you can switch between unbalanced and balanced.

I also forgot, how many of these can I have installed? Two? (total of 256GB of memory, that would be great!)

The HM-901 only has one full sized SDXC Slot.  I have a 128GB Class 10 Sandisk Extreme 45MB/s (had about 35MB/s write speed sustained) and it works great in the HM-901.

I read other forum about the AK120, it does not feel hot even many hours of listening.
What about DX100 o HDP-R10, are they feeeling hot too after playing for a long time?

My main worry is the heat load might cause reliability issue and high temp. might potentially degrade the quality of SMT or even thru-hole components on PCB.

The HM-901 gets pretty warm, seems to be not quite as hot as the HM-801's heat, but it's spread out more, and not concentrated so much in a single spot or two like the HM-801.  Getting a custom case, you should definitely have cut outs for the side vents.

I'll have to borrow an IR Thermometer, but it's never painfully hot, I'd be surprised if it's over 50C.

Anyone has any first hand comparison between the HM-901 and AK120? Love to hear dual ES9018 vs dual 8740 pros and cons.

The 6th board will be a 801 board so those who like the sound of the 801 can have it in the 901.

Really! I know I was all for the 901 a few posts ago but tonight I was listening to a friends vinyl 24/96 rip of love over gold by Dire Straits and fell in love even more with my 801! Honestly, it was like I stepped back thirty years and was listening to the album once again!

What a fantastic album. Always been one of my favourites. They simply don't make albums like that any more... [SIGH !]  (and I do happen to have a 24/96 rip of it)

The title track, in particular, sounds wonderful on vinyl...when that percussion kicks in...

You walk out on the high wire
You're a dancer on thin ice
You pay no heed to the danger
And less to advice
Your footsteps are forbidden
But with a knowledge of your sin
You throw your love to all the strangers
And caution to the wind

And you go dancing through doorways
Just to see what you will find
Leaving nothing to interfere
With the crazy balance of your mind
And when you finally reappear
At the place where you came in
You've thrown your love to all the strangers
And caution to the wind

But I'm digressing. Sorry, just blissed-out for a minute... wink_face.gif

Received mine earlier today. I believe it's of the latest batch (ordered 2 days ago from Hifiman's official store)

Loaded up the player with some 24/88.2 ALAC files, pressed "Play", sound came out but music was played at like half the normal speed confused_face.gif What a surprise. Replaced the ALAC with FLAC and the everything's back to business.

I couldn't wait to try the balanced card only after 5 minutes of listening. The installation took a while cos the battery was kinda hard to remove. The manual wasn't helpful at all on this.

Sound quality (w/ the balanced amp card) was like what other have said: very rich and full bodied with good microdetails.

The UI was responsive, fairly simple and easy to use. No major complaint here. Cover art is missing though, but I am sure Fang and his team are working on this.

I thought the build quality was excellent too, until the damned scroll wheel came off after 3 hours of use...WTF...so much for the triple QC stamps on the warranty card rolleyes.gif

Will need to talk to their customer service tomorrow..

Only 3 hours of use. Well that's a bummer. Sorry for your experience mate.

Do you have a shot of the on and off switch on the side?

that has been the problem. i was almost going to pull the trigger on this but then i was reading feedbacks from all those buys on Taobao and found there were quite a few of those complaining some faulty parts and had to send back to factory for warranty.... now i am pending...
