That's a big plus on FiiO's side. I mean come on, we know it can't match HM901 w/ balanced card, but if it comes that close, we have a winner probably. Would like to see extended review after some time, if possible?

I listen to a lot of female vocals and jpop when im on the go. I feel like it gives me more emotion and I can also hear the singers clearer. I havent really directly AB the two, but I feel like ive been reaching for the classic card when I leave home in the morning more often than the balanced.

That said, the balanced card do feel better technically, I can hear more layers, the classic is much less fatigue though and easier on my ears.

I use my jh13 pro and ie8 with my 901.

Interesting, I haven't noticed the classic card being noisy, maybe since I only use my 901 outdoors on the street.

No man. The balance card if used SE is really nothing compared to using the IEM card SE. It's a very noticeable difference. To me and some others who have tried it feel the same as well. The balanced card SE, is really not bad, but once you've tried the IEM card SE, the balance card SE would sound a little veil, not as detailed and textured.

Agree.
Hence, I always terminate or mod to trrs balance before use.

Thanks for the input. So classic card really shines for music with vocal. Great

I got my 901 with the standard card. My first impression was WOW!!!!. It made my senns hd600 sound like never before. I couldn't believe such perfection and musicality. To my ears, it was perfect. However, after reading lots of good comments about the balanced card, I decided to purchase it and also a balanced cable for my headphones. I was expecting a really good sound to become even better with the balance card, but for some reason, it did not do it for me. The sound was very, very fatiguing, even at low volumes and it didn't have the wow factor I got with the standard card. I don't know how to explain, but I just didn't like its sound. I did a lot of comparisons between the 2 cards. At the end, I returned the balanced and just kept the standard.

It wast only, until recently that I started to think if there was something wrong with that card in particular. How could I be the only person that prefers the standard card? I order again another balanced card, hoping to hear that excellent sound every one talks about and this time.... the same story again, I did not like the sound, returned it and kept the standard.

I realize that we all have different ears and we hear things differenty. This is my own personal opinion, but to my ears, the standard car sounds better than the balanced card. I am just happy to know, I am not the only one who thinks this way.

Again, this is just my personal opinion. I am sure the balance sounds better to the majority of people here, but strangely enough, not to me.

Is there anyone else with a similar experience?

I prefer the balanced card but I do like the standard card very much with high impedance phones. As a case in point, It makes my boring DT770 sing.

It's a pity that it's not usable with my IEMs bcos of the hiss.

I use 334s. Friend has pretty much most of the Fitears and agrees on the same thing. Was the one that actually introduced the IEM card to me.

Btw, I'm not saying the balance card isn't good by any means. Just can't compare if used single-ended.

I can agree with that. I used to use 334 with balance card , the sound is a bit too much upfront for my taste.

I think the balanced card used SE is not as nuanced and delicate as the IEM card. Especially when you have a incredibly clear IEM like the Fitear 435

In my case it is noise. I can hear the stepped attentuator clicking when changing the volume. It makes a short click or hiss till it is in it's new position.

Man you guys are making me worry. I really don't know which amp card to buy right now :D. I hope I don't end up buying both. If I buy the balanced card i definitely want to go balanced but then I end up buying new cables and adapters. There is no DIY thread to change terminations from se to trrs ? I don't want to buy new cables, changing termination would be enough for me..

I am still considering the Minibox card though. Pretty impressive specs.....

Today I had more time listening to a couple pieces of classical symphony (all live recordings) I am familiar with:

HM901+RE600 balanced

- Forward sounding

- More focused imaging

- Sound is more dense, warmer and a little darker

- More realistic timbre, closer to live

- Notes have more weight

X5+RE600 single-ended

- More spacious sounding

- For a couple of times I noticed minute details (like tiny noise from the audience) were clearer

Remember the RE600 was specifically tuned for the 901 (or so I heard), perhaps it'll be different for other phones.

Thanks! Does that mean X5 measures well with HM901 for classical symphony type music? How about solo recitals piano , violin...and quartest.....

I am slowly forming a strange habit of putting well recorded classical or jazz music in my HM901 only..... I will be so glad if X5 measures well and serves as a solid alternative.

Ahhhh, now that you mention it, maybe *maybe the classic card has a louder click and hiss sound....I will try it with my balanced tmr and see, today i'm using the class card again....

I want to try out the minibox as well, but have been saving up for a new dac for my desktop rig, so that'll have to wait
