^THIS.  I was a bit freaked out about this initially and it is indeed the way a stepped attenuator works.  And the biggest advantage of this bulky attenuator over a normal POT is that ALL volume ranges are usable - no imbalance at very low volume with is typically the case for POTs.

I'm using the extremely powerful DIY board to drive the TG334 and been using volume 1 or 1.5, and even at 0.5 at quiet places and there is no channel imbalance or any other issue at such low volume settings.

I figured that may be the case. Sometimes i just find the ideal volume is just between clicks (and the clicks can feel a little uncertain at times as there is a small amount of play between up and down) but it's no major issue. I can get used to it. just wondered if anyone else had experienced the same behaviour.

Where did you get the 901? The volume control should be the latest if you got a newly released 901 but if from the first batch, I would contact Hifiman as there was an issue with some of the first volume controls.

The RE600's are excellent. For bass you just need to find the right fit and depth for the monitor. I use mine with the wire always going up and over the ear. They just seem to fit better and I can adjust for the bass quality where I couldn't with the wire facing down."

1 - I got mine from Stereodesk just last week so I assume it would be a new batch.

2 - True that! They do seem to fit and sound better  with the over ear setup.

What sort of burn in time is required roughly?

I'm starting to get used to the sound of the RE600's

The way they represent voice is gorgeous! and over the ear configuration seems to be the go for me. The sennheiser ear buds I have had for many years before these are probably very bass heavy and over emphasizing the low end so it's just a case of unlearning the false representation of the lower end spectrum.

where can you can you get a line out cable for connecting the hm901 to an amp? Doesn't seem head-direct sells any.

One comes included with the 901, but it is pretty short. If you need more than a foot, i suggest buying some RCA female-female adapters.

No, that isn't a problem.

It will be a tall task to find a portable amp that is worth the hassle. Heck even desktop amps you will probably need to go over 1k to get tangible improvement.

I was all set to get the gorgerous Woo Fireflies. Demo it at the hifi show this past weekend, they set it up with AK100 as source and paired with HD800, but it didn't sounded better than with hm901 straight out of the DIY amp board. I then used my 901 as source and still didn't find it actually improve the sound. Same for HDVD800.

But boy the Fireflies is really gorgerous! Fang need to cross with Woo to get an 1001 designed by Woo and they can take all my $$$!

I was originally planning on getting baseline 901 w/ out amp and then getting a 627x to strap to it. So in your opinion you think it is not worth the money, and I should just get 901 w/ balanced amp?

The Balanced and IEM amp cards uses the OPA627 as well.

It is worth it if you are really really into the Portaphile house sound. From a power perspective it will not be worth the $$$ or making it less portable. I m a bit down now I don't have an excuse for the black fireflies.

You may want to seek out spkrs01 for his views as he owns all the highend portable amps and also the 901 with balanced board.

What would you say is the diff between the Portaphile house sound and the HM901 balanced? Considering it's the same opamp, I've read very similar type of impressions about the two to make me feel the signature is very similar.

I'm also considering this combination.

It was a while ago since I heard it (paired with dx100) and I would say it is slightly warmer and mid centric. But this is going off memory so don't rely on this. Btw the balanced amp uses 2 opa627 per channel vs 1 per for 627x...
