I don't know if it's specific to 1.080 'cos I didn't really test 1.074 long enough, but I do get "skips" or "pauses" kind of like the buffer is trying to catch up with the streaming.

I would like to add my thoughts into the HM901 vs AK120.

I don't really believe that one is necessarily warmer than the other as both players has tonality and naturalness pretty much spot on, and definitely class leading in the current crops of Daps available.

However, the contrast between the 901 and 120 is in the density of of the presentation. The 901 on the balance card is very dense, very papable....however, the 120 is able to mimic a similar type presentation on DSD files, otherwise it is lighter and seemingly faster sounding.

Hi spkrs01,

Able to share the firmware for this impression?

Currently, am loving the different tonality that the HM-901 (v1.080) with standard/balance cards and AK120 (v1.00) brings.

Despite their differences, i can switch easily between them and still enjoy my music. Agree with the M-901 balance card sounding denser.

As with the firmware in use, the HM-901 is faster compared to the AK120.

Though i do find the DX100 a split micro-second faster than HM-901.

Which can make fast tracks and ballads sound unnaturally faster than they should.

Have yet to try DSD on the AK120 ... will do so when there's unanimous count that 1.32 kicks 1.00 butt. smile.gif

The HM-901 when turned on and ready to play (after media scan complete), plays without sound. Track timer ticking, no sound.

Changing music tracks occasionally result in still hearing the track playing very faintly. When selecting a new song track to play, the previously stopped track resumes.

On times when change of music tracks work, the songs play without sound.

The last button moving to last played track can be unresponsive at times.

All these issues go off after powering off and on a few times. Yes, it's a pain but this player is just sooo good.

The first buggy,

Seems to be persistent now each time the HM-901 is powered on. A off-on action solves it every time though it's quite the irritant each time it happens.

Really hope HifiMan releases a better firmware soon to fix this (and hoping it is not a hardware problem).

I am still on the FW that the 901 arrived with.

On the AK120, 1.32 kicks 1.00 arse and on DSD files, it in a different league altogether.

Along with the AK100S.....we are really heading exciting times for portable audio:)

It seems to me, this player still needs some time to function properly without a problem.

Alright. Will give the 1.32 a go. smile.gif

The HM-901 for me is more buggy than the DX100 when i first got it.

But as with the DX100, the SQ is so good, am willing to hang in there till the firmware fixes come in.

DX100 has a lot of firmware updates to fix most of the problems too. It will be nice to see mature HM901.

If you do not like it, you can always go back to 1.00, it is available.

1) Never had this problem (either 1.074 or 1.080beta), but I have not done a full rescan on 1.080beta, only the normal media scan when it boot up.  It would play ok even when the scanning still in progress.

2) Yes, when skipping/switch tracks I can hear the last track continue for 0.5 second or so very faintly (almost like current still flowing out of a capacitor when power is cut) before the next song start.  But I had not had previously stopped track resuming.

3) Have had this intermittently on 1.074 but cannot reproduce, and happened twice which require a reboot to fix.

4) Don't find the "Rewind/Back/Last" button unresponsive.  But the 901 needs two button press to rewind/ff a track when the screen is off - first press only wakes the unit up, second press got executed.  I'd rather it to be able to operate with the screen off like the AK120.

I share the same view that the firmware still has some ways to go.  But unlike DX100 where the main bottleneck was running the Android OS with an underpowered processor itself which is not really something iBasso can fix themselves, the miscues we find on HM-901 seems to be firmware fixable.  DX100 will always be slow and sluggish even if they perfected the UI with no bugs.

For me, whenever I need some quick, brief, casual listening, I go for my AK120.  When I'm in the mood of some real musical enjoyment or having long period of times (like in airport lounges or on flights) I would always prefer the HM-901.

When is this product supposed to be released? I've been hearing about it for a longs time, there are shots of it being built, but it seems it is not ready yet? Any one have some info?

Just received a pair of RE-400 and He-400 and really like the value of the HiFiMan product, RE-400 are a steal! I'd like to continue supporting the company and get this over an AK100 maybe...

HM901 seems to be a clear upgrade over AK100. I think they are about to release. In Europe, they will officialy launch it in a month. In Asia people can already buy. In the States I think you can preorder if I am not mistaking, which means it is almost there.

Yes, you can pre-order (USA). AC Gears and Moon Audio have the HM-901 product pages up. If you're buying within a week, AC Gears is running a 10% promotion (code: bbheadfi) so you can get for $100 off the MSRP biggrin.gif

If I was at states I would order it honestly, it seems like a killer.

Yeah. When the DX100 matured enough, was really enjoying the music more than troubleshooting it. smile.gif

Ah well.. back to the drawing board with the HM901. rolleyes.gif

At this moment, at least for myself, the HM901 is the player to beat. Bugs aside, this is one killer player when paired with the right ear gears.

Hey kkcc,

Am glad it's just me then. Else wonder how you guys could endure these bugs.

Seems like issues 1 to 3 are more or less unique to my experience, while issue 4, the problem is intermittent, pressed a few times and sometimes respond after 4 presses rolleyes.gif

Am wondering if i should do a change of player now. Especially issue 1, it's getting frequent.

Yeah, AK120 for casual listening is cool. And definitely grab the HM901 for some real enjoyment (after dealing with the issues).

Thanks Mimouille smile.gif

Yup. Made the change to 1.32 after some research here on changing firmware.

It's the community sharing spirit here that's making the stay in head-fi really fun.

Oh ya, the 1.32 .. very nice. Sounds faster, more dynamic and dare i say it... almost DX100 in a sense, yet retain AK120 character.

And DSD playback ... especially with my friend's Fitear TG334 ... L3000.gif  am SO gonna get me one of those 334 biggrin.gif
