The HM-901 with standard amp really surprised me. The sound coming from the standard amp is as powerful as the DX100+MK3B combo. Just so odd.

The difference though is the DX100+MK3B combo sounds tighter in the bass slam area and a little more coherent.

The gap between the 2 is very small though, making the DX100+MK3B stack existence really pointless.

The HM-901 with balanced amp on my JH13 sounds simply amazing. L3000.gif

It doesn't have the huge power behind the sound like the DX100+MK3B stack, yet sounds more enjoyable.

So so smooth, musical, magical in the atmosphere it delivers. There's an amazing tonality that i just can't describe.

With slower vocal tracks, you just stop everything you're doing to just wanna soak up that special emotional moment.

On fast tracks, you just want to dance, shake your body and move to the groove. And i thought the DX100 was already "toe tapping" fun.

Question:

With the balanced amp used, do i select the "Balanced" or "Normal" switch next to the headphone out? Both have a slight difference.

On Balanced "Sounds more neutral but clearer" while on "Normal" sounds a bit warmer but still clear.

Firmware 1.080 is still buggy though.

The HM-901 when turned on and ready to play (after media scan complete), plays without sound. Track timer ticking, no sound.

Changing music tracks occasionally result in still hearing the track playing very faintly. When selecting a new song track to play, the previously stopped track resumes.

On times when change of music tracks work, the songs play without sound.

The last button moving to last played track can be unresponsive at times.

All these issues go off after powering off and on a few times. Yes, it's a pain but this player is just sooo good.

That's interesting. I've not noticed those issues with 1.080 yet. But I do love gapless.

Does gapless really work with 1.080?

The manual says "balanced" for balanced phones and "normal" for single-ended.

I tried it for Phantom of the Opera & Jesus Christ Superstar (Aust cast) & that worked fine for me.

Kenz, you need balanced cables with TRRS plug when selecting Balanced at the HPO.

Yes you would need to use SE for normal 3.5mm terminated cables. Choosing balanced on 901 for SE will result in phase issues and would sound all wrong.

You can also try the HD vs Vintage switch. I like HD personally but some swear by vintage.

That's not a bad idea actually.

But since ALAC is a four letter word, I would have never thought of it! ;-)

Is there a cable you need to go from single ended JH13 to the balanced 901 amp? I am a bit confused on this without seeing pictures.

Yeah. it sounded off on Balanced switch, somewhat listenable but "off".

Varied the HD and Vintage, and the HD switch reminds me a bit of DX100 but loving the Vintage more. L3000.gif

Balanced amp is a card slotted in the player itself (beneath the battery).

Headphone out jack uses a 3.5mm TRRS format. So the cable termination must be in TRRS format to benefit from the balanced amp.

As I understand, even without TRRS, in SE mode, you still benefit from the fact that the balanced amp is better than standard amp right?

Question to all lucky owners, does most of the benefit of the balanced amp over standard amp come from it being a better amp or from being balanced. To be clear, if you get the 901 with balanced card but still use it in SE mode because you do not want to upgrade cables, do you still get 95% of the SQ?

It is different chips so a different sound. What a person prefers is up to them. One has the 8397 and the balanced has the opa627 op amps and the buf634 for the output.

Yes.. Standard amp is 1x AD8397.  Balanced amp is 4x opa627 + 4x buf634 (and I'm assuming if used in SE mode, 2x of each).  The minibox amp is using 3x 627/634.

I've said earlier it's entirely a marketing flop to call these two cards Standard board vs Balanced board giving the impression the latter is just a balanced version of the first....  I would have named them sth along the lines of "Super Energy Efficient Go Green 12hrs non-stop music board", and "Hi-End Premium Uber Head Blown Board with Balanced".  very_evil_smiley.gif
