It plays anything up to 24/196 (including 176.4, 96, 88.2, 48) without any issue. It also play normal 16/44.1 FLAC.

Thats great news, thank you! So many albums I want are not 24/96 so this would be great! Time for some bean counting me thinks!

You are welcomed. Just make sure to resist the urge to buy with just the standard amp unless you are pairing with IE800 or K3003 which the std amp was supposedly tuned for...

Your HM-801 should play CD format FLAC files (44.1kHz/16bit) plus 48kHz/16bit and then 44.1kHz/24bit, 48kHz/24bit and of course 96kHz/24bit.

The only sampling freq HM-801 doesn't do is 88.2kHz.

Lars, as usual you are a mine of information! I was worried that anything below 96kHz would downsample to 16/44. I have plenty of wav 16/44's but thought I was only able to play 24/96.

I am running firmware version 19 as I like the sound of that more than the latest!
Thanks so much, I really appreciate it!

And of course I rush to HD tracks only to find Jazz at the Pawnshop is 24/88!

Wouldn't your worry be the reverse?

You are welcome!

You can downsample to 44.1kHz/24bit and see how it plays them. Most of these FLAC files will play as 24bit, but for some reason a few will be played as 16bit. This is completely random as far as I can see. In one album all but one track is read as 24bit. Why the last track is read as 16bit is a mystery.

This brings up something I have been meaning to ask. I use a Mac, how do I downsample? I have Xact and I keep reading I can do it that way but for the life of me I cannot see the feature on there to do it, can someone help me on this point as there are several 24/176 recordings I would love to have if I could downsample to 96!

I wonder if it's a flagging / file-header issue.

That's really weird....

Just out of curiosity, have you tried re-encoding the flac (to flac) using a different encoder?   Just to experimentally troubleshoot it...

And the new 901 do not do this downsampling... all HD files are played in their native rate.

You can set the sampling rate via the Audio MIDI Setup app under Utilities.

Or you can limit the sample rate in software with some players.

Unless you are talking about re-ripping them at a different sample rate? (you can do that as well)

I suspect Ian means he wants to purchase (or already has) some 24/176 but their filesize makes them (relatively) unviable for portable use on a 32 or 64 gig SD card. Downsampling would make them a more sensible filesize. That's certainly how I feel about some of my HD stuff, so I downsample into actual 24/96 files.

HM-801 doesn't downsample the files. I was talking about using software on a computer to downsample the 88.2kHz files to 44.1kHz, because the 801 doesn't support that specific sampling rate.

Your really close. My 801 won't play files above 24/96 but there are albums that I would love that are 24/192/176 and such and what I need is something to downsample those purchased files to 24/96 so that I can play them on my player, Its not so much about size as SD cards are cheap as chips now.

I looked at the midi thing but how would that work for my situation as it seems to be about microphones and speakers. There is a really famous Janos Starker Bach album i would love which is 24/176 and I would love to purchase it and downsample it to 24/96 to play on my player!
