Gapless is tempting but I'm not brave enough.  I will scan erji for a few days before trying!

Does the X3 allow for downgrading / backdating  the firmware?

I know many devices refuse to let you turn back any upgrades, but I would anticipate that Fiio wouldn't put such stupid restrictions on their devices.

You're asking in the wrong thread. Or do you mean the 901?

A few brave souls tried 1.080beta over at erji and seems nothing horribly wrong happened.... but will still wait for a few more days at least for more comments and impression... Probably won't do it until a few weeks after official release LOL

Subbed... but might arm myself with a portaphile until the 901's creases are ironed out.

Thanks for all the great info, chaps. This thread is a good resource, fueling many informed choices.

It does seems built issues are largely fixed with their new mass production line/process - at least haven't seen much built quality related issues on chinese forums these days and my unit is very solidly built.  It was my number one concern earlier.

Firmware is another story though and I recommend the 1.074 stable version.  It is indeed stable.  Don't rush to upgrade your firmware until it's been tested and confirmed by others.  Most of new firmware may have undesirable effects so unless there is a burning issue with your unit that would be fixed by the new firmware, patience is a virtue!  And this is my experience not only with Hifiman 901, but in general.  I'm still regretting updating my AK120 to firmware 1.21 to find worse sound.

Hey kkcc,

It's really funny in a sense,

the hardware built of the HM-901 and firmware issue of the AK120, are the only barriers to a sure buy decision.

Maybe these 2 companies can help each other solve each others' issues biggrin.gif

Today I received yet another scroll wheel from Hifiman and this time it's great! Stays firm and scrolls smooth. I am a happy man biggrin.gif

IMO the only major build issue is the scroll wheel. I am sure Fang will pay special attention to this for international release lol

Em yup iriver can help the build issues and design, but no Hifiman won't be able to help iriver on firmware LOL... they themselves would need all the help on that. What Hifiman might help is on sound and tuning smily_headphones1.gif

It still looks ugly and runs warmer than I like but build is actually top notch. Really wondering where all those issues I heard came from or if later production is really much improved. It get harder and harder to go back to the AK120 sound. AK120 almost feel too polite and too mellowed comparatively.

Especially since iriver / JMoon hasn't given AK120 owners access to their original, possibly best sounding FW.....like they know best....WTF?

IMO It would look pretty okay if not for that faux leather thing on top and the big fat attenuator in silver.

They really need to hire an industrial designer

I really don't want to take it out of my pocket when I'm out and about.... But I also don't want to go out without it! I can understand the design is heavily compromised for the sound components, but that faux leather is really WTF!

I just listened to it for maybe three hours straight, killed its battery, continuing on my AK120 and keep feeling unsatisfied. I now want an extra battery and charging dock...
