I hear ya... More high-end choices can never be a bad thing. I just wish that there was more transparency around progress/issues... Kinda hard to plan your gear choices when you are kept in the dark...

If I'm not mistaken the published spec for HM-901 is at least last for 8 hours when fully charged.

ooh, are you going to buy a Hifiman 901?

Did you give up on the ipod 5G?

That's why I said a mixture of 24/192 & 16/44.1. Official specs are most likely based on 16/44.1 only.

Still keep iPod 5G but it does not sound better than Colorfly C3.

Many of us are looking for next DAP which is sound many times better than C3+BH.

To choose among DX100, HD-P R10, HM-901, X5 or AK-120.

If comparing the battery life (fully charged) between HM-901 against DX100 based on the mixture 24/192 and 16/44.1, which is last longer based on your actual experience?

So far HM-901.

A question that might be stupid, but Anakchan you may be able to answer me. If you have the 901 with balanced amp card and you get a TRRS (is that how it is called) adapter, you can plug all you phones and listen to them balanced ? Or have I got it all wrong and you need balanced phone cables too ? I understand nothing of balanced...

The trrs plug has to be soldered to the cables (unless the headphone already has another balanced plug). A normal stereo plug has three contacts: left, right and ground. A balanced plug like the trrs has: left, left inverted, right and right inverted. In other words, if you have a headphone terminated with balanced plug, you can get an adapter to use it single ended, but not the other way around.

The TRRS plugs are quite common with so-called iPhone/Smartphone cables (where in that extra connection is for the microphone). But yes it's possible to listen to balanced with TRRS plugs as long as it's wired properly. I was hoping Tralucent was able to find a decent TRRS 3.5mm plug for my Uber cable (since they have my Uber for repair) but seems they're hard to source. Nor have a  TRRS adapter-to-SE plug for normal use of the cable 'cos I don't really want a dedicated balanced Uber cable either.

By the way the HM-901 lasted sometime between 7.5 hrs -> 8 hrs today of continuous play. Admittedly I didn't really change songs much and just let it play (but did switch albums every now and then). My battery comparison to my DX100 may need to be revisited as some other DX100 owners get 7.5 hrs which I've not been able to achieve. May do some power conditioning of the DX100 and redo the battery life test again.

So far, very pleased with the HM-901. A good call by someone to delete non-music tracks. It sped up quite a bit.

Thread Starter

You can find TRRS in non magnetic, which is important for audio but the TRRS with a steel center pin is much more common.

Are Pailiccs TRRS 3.5mm non-magnetic? I see Pailiccs mentioned every now and then in the audio context. Is there a brand that Hifiman recommends since they're (only maker I know??) using balanced TRRS 3.5mm sockets?

I have tried/listened to the DX100, HM-901 and AK120 already.

My comment was a tongue in cheek comment referring to fact that not so long ago you were spamming every thread with `omergerd-teh ipod 5G is teh best eva`. biggrin.gif

I apologized if you feel so.

Anyway after I had C3, it totally changed my perception about iPod.blink.gif

Since you had listened to all of them, can you tell us which is the best to go for it?

Despite ExpatInJapan's differing tastes in music from me, I concur with his findings.
