Would a TRRS plug still work as balanced even if only have the IEM card? I am planning to order a cable with a TRRS plug, but I am using an IEM card at the moment.

No a TRRS does not work on a normal HO. So when I buy cables with TRRS termination and I want to use them on other DAPs, which always the case, I also order a TRRS to 3.5 short adapter. DHC, Whiplash or Beat Audio all do it to my knowledge. Other certainly do too.

Always informative and helpful ;)

Much appreciated.  I will have to get a Balanced card at that.  On a side note, does the balanced card improve SQ even if I am only using SE?

If I were you I would stick to the iem card. Many people prefer it over the balanced card with iems, others prefer the opposite but there is no clear upgrade between the 2 for iems. I have not tried the iem card, but the volume and volume steps are also more adapted to iems.

Thanks. I'll consider that as well.  And maybe have the budget for another IEM? CIEM perhaps?

My suggestion stands still, sell IE800 and get a better high end c/iem to pair with balanced card. You can easily get a cable with TRRS termination and TRRS to TRS adapter too for other daps.

These cables are costly...the adapter alone is often 100$.

Ok I admit at this point, I don't like what Sennheiser did with IE800, totally the sound, the design, the cable system etc everything. I demoed it and honestly, didn't like it also the fit was one of the worst universals I ever put in my ears.

However, tell me, a worthy upgrade with an a little bit extra cost would add a high pleasure to his ears wouldn't it?

I like the IE800 and he must like it too....so it depends on what he wants...

Well if he really likes and wants to keep it, then iem card would be the best solution I believe.

Can I ask exactly what your set up is like at min please

The current add in card your using with the 901 and also the set up of the 901 that you mostly leave it as?

Like... Balanced/normal - Low gain/High gain - HD/Vintage

Just trying to get a set up that people have used with the IE800 and take it from there.

I didn't think Balanced/Normal would apply to the IE800's being that they're single ended?  And especially with the IEM card, which doesn't support balanced?  As far as HD/Vintage, with the IE800's I usually use Vintage, as it tames the highs some.  Low gain/High gain for me really depends on the volume I attain with the volume wheel.  Sometimes the volume steps don't give me a comfortable listening volume, so I often use the gain switch to get me to a better volume.  But ultimately there's really no right or wrong settings - I think the settings you use will really be up to what sounds good to you.  What works for me may not necessarily work for you.  I think you just have to try them to see.

OH thanks for this info, almost pulled the trigger on iem card thinking it could do balanced. I have bought a bling bling cable ^_^ trrs terminated so I'll need the balanced card.

The release of HM-802 isn't making decision easy though, because I like how they describe HM-802 sound (warm and musical, like the HM-801) but would mean I have to give up getting the TOTL HM-901, with impressive dual dacs, which is affordable with my current budget as well.
