Sorry if I've missed this but has anyone done a review of all amp module offerings for the HM-901 may it be from Hifiman or a DIYer??

My standard amp card also produces hiss so I guess it's just normal. Did you also order the balance card? Not only it's dead quite but also a huge improvement over the standard card.

I'm not sure what you mean by "hearing the steps of the volume wheel" but the volume control is indeed a stepped attenuator.

The 901 plays 24/44.1 FLAC perfectly, so in the mean time you can try converting your ALAC files into FLAC first (if feasible).

Thanks.

It sounds superb even with the standard amp. Hiss is disappearing at the moment more and more. I listened a couple of hours yesterday and I think finally it "broke-in" ?!

I already converted my high res ALAC files to Flac beforehand. Just needed to load on the card. I wanted to try the ALAC suppport and know if it's working. I used XLD for converting without having any issues. I think XLD is really the way to go, works flawlessly. Give me a little bit more time for the balanced card, my wallet is crying.

Not really but pekingduck has them all. Actually there are a couple of people in this thread who own all the cards.

Concerning the amp-module reviews, I've definitely seen quite an amount of them on Chinese forums. :)

help the noob here!

i was holding on the purchase of HM-901 because of all the new entries to DAP's. but now after the release of AK240. i have finally made up my mind to buy HM-901. but my biggest concern regarding the purchase of HM-901 is that i can not buy it locally. i live in canada (toronto). so i just want to know if any of you guys(in Canada) have bought this player. and how much we have to pay for the duties and customs and what is the best place to buy it from(direct or through dealer).

Hi,

With the Sennheiser IE 800 and the HiFiMan 901.

I was going to get the balanced card. Would this be of benefit for these headphones?

From what I can see, they have 3 areas on the jack plug and not 4.

If not, would it be worse to use the Balanced card with the Sennheiser IE 800?

Also, Hi and Low gain,, which is suitable for the Sennheiser IE 800?

Thank you in advanced for any help offered.

The IE800's jack is a normal 3.5 jack, not a TRRS jack, but you can still use the the balanced card in single ended mode. For this specific iem I would not say the balanced card is the best option, because you cannot switch cables, so you will never take full advantage of the card. Besides I find the volume steps to be too large for iems with the balanced card...so maybe try the IEM card.

I have to agree - I also find that the volume steps can be too big for my IEMs with the balanced card.  I prefer the IEM card in that case.

Could the IEM card output balanced? Also, would a TRRS jack work with normal single ended output?

Hi,

The reason I asked is because I did get a balanced card with my 901 today (mis worded my original post above). And for some reason I thought that the Sennheiser IE 800 was a balanced IEM. An over sight on my part.

So I'm considering returning the Balanced card for the IEM card.

Will there be any loss in quality? I did not find it over loud and was listening at the highest volume setting at some stages.

But I'd prefer to get the card that would best suit the Sennheiser IE 800.

I wanted to ask some Q's if thats ok ?

Q1: High and low gain. Is this based purley on listening preference in either of the modes or is this dependent on the IEM your using to which setting it should be set to?

Q2: Balanced and Normal setting. Should this ONLY be used if using a jack plug with 4 notches (TRRS)?

I noticed that even though the Sennheiser IE 800 are not using a balanced cable. Switching to balanced gave preferred base sound.

But what should it be set to?

Thanks in advance for any further help/advice.

Maybe it is better to change the iems, just a suggestion though.

No the iem card cannot. But balanced does not equal better SQ. It is just technicallly different. A set of iems may sound better to your ears with iem card single ended than balanced card balanced or the opposite.

No a TRRS does not work on a normal HO. So when I buy cables with TRRS termination and I want to use them on other DAPs, which always the case, I also order a TRRS to 3.5 short adapter. DHC, Whiplash or Beat Audio all do it to my knowledge. Other certainly do too.

i read somewhere in this thread (first 1-20 pages). someone mentioned that the standard card is tuned for IE800.

If the IE800 sounds good with the balanced card in SE mode, than just do not bother. Low or high gain is whatever sounds best for you, I like high gain. But the normal / balanced switch should always be on balanced without a TRRS cable...some people say otherwise but I cannot say.
