HiFiMAN HM-901 visit pg 18. IMGS pg 19. FW:1.085 . . . . - Page 23

I am listening to the 901 with the C435 which I feel are the most accurate and revealing of upstream sources out of all the IEMs that I have.

The 901 is so harmonically rich from the lower mids to mid bass, however, it does not impinge into the mids at all, and the vocals maintains an ethereal presence that is rather delectable to the ears.

Trebles has nice weight and shimmer.

Soundstage is not huge but has that air of intimacy that engages the listener from the first note.....

The whole body is a heat sink and needs ventilation, which is understandable. You have two Sabre dacs, which sink a fair amount of current, which generates heat, then you have the amp board and when using the balanced that is 4 buffers, which can get warm/hot especially when driving a load. So you got to give it air/space to breath. Heat is an enemy of electronics.

Burning in the balanced card. Sounds very good.

If it is any help my 801 gets pretty warm when played for an hour or more. More so if I am not using my external amp.

My 50th birthday is coming up later this year, why do I have a feeling I know what I am getting for myself!!

When you mentioned "soundstage" is not that huge in HM-901, are you comparing it with DX100? Roughly how much different between them?

Based on your listening experience, between HM-901 & DX100, which is has a better "mid-range"?

I think it is a matter of personal taste!

The two player's presentation is quite different...where the DX100 is I would say middle of the hall, the 901 seems first 10 rows......the 901 to me has all the attributes of a good tube set up. Great sense of immediacy, coherency and a very musical presentation that engages you.

For the mids, my preference would be the 901. Whether it is coincidental or not, my AK120 with the RSA Intruder rig has a fairly similar sonic presentation to the 901 with perhaps slightly more detail....but definitely a lot more money.

I confused two cards. There won't be a special balanced card for IEM's. It will be a single ended IEM card. The balanced card can be used of course.

Maybe a leather case that's thick enough edges are protected but the side walls themselves opened up for ventilation.Edwood's post has gotten me drooling to get my setup (yet) again.

I don't really care for the heat issues as HM901 will be confined to home and office use only as it isn't really pocketable to the point I can put it in my pants or jacket pocket and listen to it on the go anyway. AK120 is still my choice for on-the-go or in-flight usage for its size and battery life.

Too bad the 901 it cannot function as an USB DAC without the dock. Any chance they will add it via firmware? I think I read the "official" reason from Fang for this is the mini USB dock isn't capable for 24/192. Jamato did you get a chance to ask about this?

The vented case is actually already available in China (from ERJI.net):

U235 card: Balanced, can provide up to 6V. More powerful than the existing one but with smaller soundstage and less detail

Minibox card: From the designer of the Minibox amps. Not sure what it is for

Two balanced cards 627 but 634 based and one with 2 opa8397

The mini card, which is opa627 and 2 buf634 for each channel so plenty of power on single ended output

IEM card

Standard card with the opa8397 op amp

I think the pokemon is still in R&D.

I have a feeling that answer will only be clear after all the amp modules are widely available, burnt in and tested side-by-side. Even though I had the HM-901 for a few days, the optional offerings for the product is very nebulous to me.

Fang should just follow Asus's trend and offer a user-replaceable amp board with 8dip sockets for our opamp rolling!
