HiFiMAN HM-901 visit pg 18. IMGS pg 19. FW:1.085 . . . . - Page 89

Purchased some DSF  DSD tracks which will not play on the 901 and idea of when the official update will arrive?

A $1000 player that can't even manage to display the name of the artist, album and the name of the track being played .

No search facility, poor and slow tag navigation, no playlist, inability to jump to other tracks or albums from the artist being played. I also really miss  some sort of cover flow or the ability to choose an album by flicking through covers..:(

There are smartphones for people like you mate. Get one, enjoy it but don't compare its sound to HM901 or DX100 or something like that.

Despite some big cons (huge size, poor durability, extremely low battery life etc) still these people are happy with it because it sounds amazing. Don't forget you are buying a Digital Audio Player not a game console or something.

That only has a fixed 32GB?  If so that would be too limiting for me. I'm staying with the HM-901.  Once I worked out the balanced amp card installation issues I have had no problems.

Yes I am  staying with the 901 - love the sound. but the bugs do drive me mad.

I should have stated I am not happy with the bugs in the firmware either but the sound quality is too good to pass on for me.

I have ordered a balanced cable for Sennheiser Momentums that should arrive withing a week or so.  It will be the third balanced cable for my headphones so I can enjoy them all fully with this player.

I wish battery life was twice as good as it is, but since it is not I will either buy another battery and charger if I run out during the day but I can live with its shortcomings.

Test list of albums, songs what not do not bother me at all.

It seems that the more convenience functions you get the lower audio quality you get. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't know any state-of-the-art equipment that includes all the functions of the consumer grade products. I see that the most critical decisions in the design of the player has been taken with the sound quality in mind... analog step volume control, swappable amp section, no touch screen, possibility to run balanced, and all of them has draw backs... Just like an example, with the quality of the amplification section of the player and the quality of the DAC you had to deal with the heat and the low battery life or increase the size of the player just for a bigger battery... there's no other way with the nowadays technology. I think that they focused more in the hardware than in the software, which is good cos is easier to fix the firmware than upgrade physical components.
Just to keep in mind, the level of usability in the iPod has 7 generations behind but they never really had in mind high quality audio... Just download an iTunes remastered album to get the most squashed version of it that the money can buy... If some day apple launch a $1,000 iPod the price tag would be cos the case is gold plated or something like that.

Did you press the release button at the top of the battery compartment?

C'mon Hifiman DAP fans, admit it!  You kind of enjoy solving all these numerous little software issues.  It makes for a more personal ownership experience, doesn't it?  I believe Hifiman understands this, and it's beneficial for them to send version 1 out to Beta test with their customers, both from a research and cashflow standpoint. And that's completely cool as long as they provide updates and upgrades for free or minimal cost.  I'll  be the first to admit that I'm just too lazy to want to screw with it, thus I settle for the convenience of an iPod and CLAS.

I still want to believe Hifiman will get there as it is still early days but I find it  frustrating to have such a great sounding unit but searching for a specific track is a palava.

I don't have the DAP with me now, I'll check this evening when I get back home. I probably missed that. There is a release thing at the bottom of the player. When I move it, I am able to remove the back cover for the battery. So you are saying there is another release button for the battery itself?

Yes, the battery is held by a button behind the back cover - at the top of the player.

FYI: Depending on which CLAS just for completeness sake the -dB was also not without issues when it was first released. More info on the CLAS thread.

Touch wood, I've not had any physical issues with my 901 yet - no wheels falling out, no L/R channels mixed up, etc.

Firmware (after owning the DX100 since batch 2) doesn't bother me much & it's kinda natural to expect firmware upgrades. The only player I've had so far that hasn't is the Tera Player. All else including AK100, AK120, iPods, etc. had at some point in their lives required a firmware update.

Agree, but here we are with a high end DAP that cuts off the beginning of the track when you select a new one... however not when you skip to next track. Then you hear the current track chopped a couple of times and the the last roughly five seconds of it, and THEN the next track will play - gapless.

Embedded cover art in FLAC files aren't read when tag browsing, but if I use folder browsing I get album art anyway. Album tag is useless if you have compilation albums. I have a 6CD called "100 Love Songs". Guess how many times the album shows up as a separate album with more than ninety artists? Ninety-something times. And since numeric titles are listed before alphabetical ones, album tag browsing is out of the question with that album on the SD card.
