Agree to other suggestions of finding the right can/iem for the music you enjoy and good luck.

Do you feel the 901 drives the 650 better in balance mode over SE?

I did not use 901 with 650 until i received the cable with trrs termination. I hope to report to you when i get back home from work

To me, the HD650's don't even sound that great unless balanced. I would bet that balanced no matter what, they are much better out of the 901.

I don't want to invest more in an amp at this stage but I would love to hear the new centrance m8. My father has a pair of Momentums which I would love to try will report back if you wish

I would be curious how the HM-901 + balanced card work with the Momentums. I have been reading reviews on the AK120 and HM-901 and came close to buying both over the last month or so. I've held off - mostly because the music I listen to (electronic and various pop genres) is not available in high-res format. Its unclear to me how much "better" my music would sound coming from these players (if any).

On the other hand, I've seen massive improvements from using the same source device with good headphones and IEM's (HD650 balanced cable) and Shure SE535 IEM's. To my ears, the money I spend there was well worth it, where money spend on DAC's and headphone amps was not.

Based upon a review of cans I read here, I bought a pair of V-moda crossfade M100's and wow! It was like having a whole new music library. The emphasis on bass is very pronounced, but controlled - its not just booming. I would not want to use them to listen to classical music for, but if you're disappointed with bass extension on popular music try and audition a pair of these. Most likely you'll end up buying them.

I am happy to report when switching from stock cable (SE) to silver cable (balance) both setting at high gain, the 901 drives the hd650 to amazing level, the amount of detail manifested even after turning down the volume.... highly recommended if you plan to do so.. I have to take back all my hateful comments on this device....

So, I had my 901 for a few days before the balanced amp card and RE-600 Songbirds arrived.  I could not tell too much of a difference so I tested with the TRS adapter and no matter what switch position it sounded the same.

I then removed the TRS adapter and messed with the switch and not difference.  I found that I have to push (the headphone TRRS connector is in all the way) very hard and it does go into balanced mode.  Once it is in balanced the difference is major so it is not like it is difficult to tell when it engages.

My balanced switch has some play in it, at least a millimeter.

Does anyone else have this issue?

I have ordered a balanced HD-650 that should arrive today so I can test two devices.

Also I have used the Momentums and they do sound very good but of course I wish I could get a balanced cable for them.

U need a trrs to trs adaptor. Re600 comes with one, hifiman also sell it standalone. Haven't find 3rd party one yet as it seems that no brand is manufacturing/selling quality trrs female jack. A fellow headfier made a slick looking one himself:

The stock/IEM amp module is NOT a balanced amp module, which is why you're not hearing a difference. When your balanced module arrives, be sure to connect/disconnect your headphones only when the player is OFF.

Yes the 901 works amazingly well when utilizing the balanced module to its fullest potential :) Glad to hear you're enjoying it much more now!

Here's is a 3-in-1 pack from their Taobao storefront:

1. trrs female to trrs male (for extension)

2. trrs female to trs male (for balanced to normal)

3. trrs female to trs male with channel reversed (for balanced to normal with L/R channel reversed)

But as I mention these aren't of the highest quality.....

Double Helix Cables makes one like that! It will set you back $120 though. As you can see in the link, he will make just about any adapter you may wish. Order, then mail exactly what adapter you want him to make.

Worth a try....  I have plenty of access to cable workshops locally but the issue had been there's no readily available parts for a good female TRRS connector. :(
