What's the special thing about being them open for that purpose? Is it due to the jaw movement and seal of the earpads?

Its due to the jaw movement and reverberation from the mouth, and the openness, whereas in a closed can the sound cannot escape so you hear it. Its why you hear blood rushing around your ears when you put a cup over them.

Before marriage I could spend more than 6 hours at a stretch. After marriage with kids I get around 1-2 hours at night only!

If so then the DT770 that is closed but has valour earpads shouldn't be affected by the jaw movement I would guess? Since valour doesn't seal much.

Its the fact that the air can escape through the open griles.

Off-Topic:
IEM's, 2 hours because of earwax, except for the bose ie2's in which I wore for 18 hours because I fell asleep with them.

On-Topic:
A900X, if I could shower with these, sleep with these, and still be hygenic. I would never take these off.
AKG-Q701's, minimum 10 minutes to get used to of the bumps, maximum 2 hours just to shake my hair because of the dents that push down at the top of my head. Also the large earpads touch my jaw that makes it uncomfortable.

In general, I believe headphones that are less than 300 grams and made for comfort don't need to be taken off at all.

While we're on the topic of IEMs (which I think are perfectly on-topic) I can wear most items for the same amount of time with the right tips, but after about 3.5 hours, my ears get crazy itchy and I have no idea why.

My Sennheiser 558 are excellent. Super light but secure.

I wear my Shure SRH 1840 8 hours no problem. They are extremely comfortable.

I can use the Shure SE535 IEM no problem all day (i use these 8 hours+) at work. Guess I'm lucky that tips fit my ears perfectly. I don't need custom tips. :p

JVC HARX300 (cotton added under earpads) and AKG K240 Studio (no mods) - All day, I'm still wearing them. Depends on my mood.

If I owned a pair of HD598s I could also wear those all day, those are god status in terms of comfort and sound.
