Connect DAC to USB Hub?

Thread Starter

Hi all,

I have a Macbook Air with a measly 2 USB ports. I have a D1 DAC, and I am wondering if I can run this through a USB hub connected to my computer, or will this "extra link" hurt the quality of sound the DAC will be outputting?

Thanks!

Is the USB hub powered? If you have too many devices connected to an unpowered hub, it might not provide enough power for the D1.

I'd try to connect the DAC directly to the computer USB port; connect the hub to the other port and everything else to the hub.

Does it matter? Maybe, maybe not.  If there's not much traffic on the hub you probably won't hear any difference.  But if you're doing large file transfers to a USB external drive, or other high-bandwidth activity, then using the hub makes it harder for the computer to deliver the music data on-time to the DAC.  That might show up as an artifact you can hear.

If you're casual about all this, you can hook your gear up whatever way is convenient and see if you hear any problems.  If you're obsessive like me, dedicate one of the computer's ports to the DAC.
