Is it possible   to use my fiio e17 with my computer and have it plugged in so i'm not running on battery all  the time?

Yes. Plug it into the USB port, and then insert the headphones.

I think what you mean is if the battery is bypassed when plugged in and so far in my experience no. When you plug it on to the USB the battery is constantly charging which mean that the e17 is running off the battery just like a cellphone. I may be wrong but this is what I've noticed from my e17, when plugged into the USB the light is always red meaning its charging.

The USB charging can be turned on or off from the menu of the E17. The light will turn blue if you turn it off.
