[REVIEW/COMPARISON] ATH-AD900X vs ATH-AD1000X vs MDR-MA900 - It's STILL over 900!!!! - Page 24

Hmmm.

The AD1000x reminds me a lot of the good old Hifiman RE-0. I really miss those. Unfortunately, mines dropped onto concrete and broke as I walked out of a Dunn Bros coffee house carrying a cup of coffee in one hand and clumsily trying to place the IEMs into my ears. That was 4 years ago. To this day, I believe those IEMs had the absolutely best treble out of all the ones I've tried, including Ety ER4S, which has been very much overrated imo. The RE-0 was also quite mids-forward, and did quite well with female vocals. Its bass had similar quality to the AD1000x also. Hifiman seems to have produced some really great products...I don't know why they kept discontinuing them. Their current RE-x00 line is sub-par compared to their earlier works, imo. If I have to guess, they're probably trying to appeal to the western market, where people favor a less mids-focused, and more warm signature.

Hi everyone,

So I got the ATH-AD1000X headphones and overall I'm very satisfied with them. However when the music is very dense I kind of find them lacking spacing and clarity in the lower volume range. I'm playing with the idea of buying a separate headphone amp for them.

Right now I've got them attached to a Marantz PM5005 small room amplifier, which ought to have a fair enough headphone amp for the less demanding ath-ad1000X. The input mostly comes from a Marantz TT5005 turntable, a cheaply built but - in my opinion- highly satisfactory turntable. It has no removable cartridge or cabless though, so that is not upgradeable except for the stylus and mat.

My question to you would be: would I get a moderate improvement in SQ if I line-out a dedicated headphone amp from the Marantz PM5005 to the at-AD1000X headphones? (theoretical setup is then thus: marantz TT5005 turntable (phono preamp off)> marantz PM5005 phono stage>desired headphone amp>ath-ad1000x headphones)

Thank you beforehand
