I love Roisin Murphy! I listened to Overpowered a lot. It's a great album for AT stuff because her voice is so nuanced - with a husky depth - but all the electronic / pop elements are just fun on the AD1000X / ES10.

Another great album, if you want to hear a fun variety of female vocals, is Here Lies Love, David Byrne + Fatboy Slim's disco opera song cycle about the life of former First Lady of the Phillipines, Imelda Marcos. Murphy is on this album as well (it was how I was introduced to her on this album) along with some other really killer vocalists. There is a different female vocalist for each part of the story, as well as some pretty itchy melodies.

I often wonder how AT always nails female vocals. Is it because there is a technical philosophy behind the design of AT headphones that always inadvertently results in such a peak, or is there some kind of tuning master at AT who just decides the final sound for everything must be so? (Or more likely, both?)

In about 2 days I'll have my Dt 880s and I'll be able to pin point why I liked them as much [when I had them] then hopefully after that it can be a battle between the Dt 880 [I'm getting a Recabled Preimum 600 ohm] and the AD 1000x, should be a good comparison imo!

Still Murphy has a sexy voice, also check out this young lady for another good vocal on the Audio Technica House Sound!

Also, I dunno lol. a_rec on the forum makes more sense I guess. There may be many Lachlan's on the forum but only one a_rec? I happen to like a_rec, I never thought of that as shorthand. The name comes from the first lines of dialogue in the English dub of Evangelion.

The DT880 vs the AD1000X is an interesting comparison. One is a champion of linear clarity, the other is a more musical / tuned experience. I find the DT880 more comfortable so it really competes a lot for ear time, even though the AD1000X is magical. The MA900 is still my go to can when I just wanna relax heh.

And I liked that track you posted! :)

Nice vocalist! I enjoyed her on my Modded w1000x as well

A bit of a side not but I like the w1000x for the same reasons that ...do I call him Lachlan or a_rec? Either way, the w1000x [after L3000 pads and a Purrin mod] has the very same Solidity and punch to it's mids that you report the AD 1000x as having, although I'm sure the AD1000x has more sound stage clarity and bass [one thing the w1000x needs is less a tighter bass with less decay]

Which is good because I got the Ath w1000x because I wanted a closed can that sounded like the Beyer Dt 880? Now I'm Trying to get an Ath AD1000x from Audio Technica [my contact has agree'd that would be possible] so I can review the two cans together, as they cost about the same

I just wonder which I'll like more... proably still the Beyer, since what makes the W1000x so nice in it's mids is the wooden enclosure! That wood adds a lovely tone to the mids, that you can't get without the natrual resonnace, where as the Dt 880 just sounded great with everything

I'm adding Murphy to my Vocal Music collection as we speak thanks :D

Contact your contact and tell him to ship me an AD1000x too lol

He's not gotten back to me since like Friday xD

It is Monday morning so we will see

But yes the AD1000x vs the Dt 880 600 ohm is a nice battle! My biggest fear is the w1000x vs the AD 1000x, thankfully I am taking a Mirco Computer Apps class, so maybe I can start using excel to crunch some "numbers" or speed up my review type setting with a NEW knowledge of Microsoft Word 2010

Either way, I wonder which will do better, my Modded w1000x [which has been modded to have the clean punch of the Dt 880 and Ad1000x] Or the Ad 1000x it self q.q

Bad news

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

So I will be getting the AD900x, and Mr Frank Doris is my contact, another head fi member gave me his info more importantly... Ad 1000x is discontinued :O

Good and bad to hear, not sure if the price will plummet now.  *sigh*

Also, it makes me wonder if and when AT will release a revision.

Is there an official source on this? Makes me wonder what happened with that particular model and what it means for the rest of the ADx line...

Isn't the difference between global and local US distribution pretty ... big?

Hi, I've read this thread a few times and tried the AD900x but not the Sony though, and I'm curious about the sound for electronic beats for either of them.

My taste has mostly female vocals and the occasional piano piece, but it's mostly J-pop. I'm picky about soundstage and prefer good positioning rather than pure wideness.

If you prefer good positioning, by all means go for the AD1000X or MA900. The AD900X is diffuse and somewhat messy in soundstaging. The MA900 might be a good all rounder for JPop considering the different kinds of mastering they use in studio recordings, but the AD1000X is a singularly engaging listen...

indeed, the AD1000x sounds like an open w1000x, which would be a real treat! Although how intimate is the ad1000x? the W1kx has a nice sound stage and very good imagining, but it suffers from a little to much decay, too much resonnace. It's not too good with metal, or classical anything with very delicate and super quick shifts. Yet the intmacy [with some mods and L3000 pads] is very pleasent very punchy.

I'd love to hear them both to see really what's different about them. Apparently the dt 880 and ad 900x are simmilar, but I wonder about them as well... people complain about the sound stage of the ad 900x? The dt880s is very good, not as wide as the dt 990 but equally as deep

Either way I'm off to ship my Jds Labs C5 for a tune up
