HDCD list - Page 11

You should be able to. I haven't tried it myself, but I'm told that even mp3 compression retains HDCD encoding. I wonder if that works with ogg vorbis.

It didn't work, there is 1.75 seconds of dead silence at the beginning of each track. Now I'm using Audacity to trim the silence off of each wav, then I'll rip it to cd and we'll see what happens!

Wish me luck.

Edit: Ok that didn't work, I got rid of the gaps but lost the HDCD encoding. I need to edit my previous comments on sound quality, I did some more listening and my MFSL version of "The Wall" sounds better than this supposed HDCD version.

The moral of the story, don't waste your money on the HDCD import of Pink Floyds "The Wall."

Hmmmm....Lee Ann Womack's Greatest Hits has just been issued on hybrid SACD, so I wonder if the CD layer is still HDCD-encoded. This item is on my shopping list.

Sad to hear, but it doesn't surprise me. If it were really HDCD then I would have expected there to be an "official" release in HDCD available. Sounds to me like the album was simply ripped, and then that version was encoded in HDCD, instead of the masters being encoded directly to HDCD. I'm guessing a lot of the HDCD imports of non-HDCD releases were created this way.

I got the hybrid SACD to Lee Ann Womack's "Greatest Hits" tonight, and sure enough, as I play the CD layer using Windows Media Player, the HDCD indicator came on.

Anyone know what happened to the list of HDCD-encoded CDs at hdcd.com?

Looks like they're having technical difficulties with their database. The "HDCD of the Day" can't find anything either.

Yeah, I am not getting anything on their page either.

This site looks great - does it sell all types of DVD-A and SACD or just HDCDs (Is there a difference?)

I believe it's not so much a commerce site as it is an information site -- they're trying to sell HDCD to recording engineers and CDP manufacturers, I suppose, but not to random people like us. (When it's working, I believe there are Amazon links or something like that, but you're not actually buying it from HDCD.com.)

HDCD is a not-too-uncommon way of recording a Redbook-compatible CD with a bit more frequency range, which gives the album a little bit more room to play around in. It is not DVD-A or SACD -- those are entirely seperate formats, and neither one will be able to decode HDCD information, since it takes a special decoding chip for that.

I think all of Ice Cubes remasters are HDCD. I just bought Death Certificate at BB and popped it in. Lo and behold HDCD. It doesnt sound great though.

i'm pretty sure of that myself -- actually, i believe that most everything Priority Records has put out since a few years back is HDCD -- but since i don't own or haven't played those CDs in my player, i'm not gonna go out on a limb to state that.

and yeah, my amerikkka's most wanted wasn't the type of remaster i was expecting; it's more like "we ran the tapes through an HDCD encoder so now they're remastered," which i guess in a technical sense is true.
same thing for those king crimson CDs i have.

and just so i can add to the list (since i haven't completed my personal list yet -- that's taking waaaaay longer than i expected!):

Better Than Ezra: Friction, Baby
Ten Things I Hate About You OMPS *

Thanks for the rap, guys Too bad the sound quality on those aren't on par with what HDCD can do, though.

By the way, does anyone else have the Emerson String Quartet's Bach: The Art of Fugue? It was mentioned as HDCD earlier, but my own copy is not (same label numbers). Can anyone else out there try it and see?

Another one:

The Tragically Hip: Music At Work*

The complementary sampler CD that accompanied the October/November issue of Tracks magazine is a compilation from various artists' recent releases (Los Lonely Boys, Joss Stone, Steve Earle, Quincy Jones, K.D. Lang, etc.). I did not systematically check each track but every time I looked during several auditions of the disk, the HDCD light was on.

And another one:

Rock/pop
Lisa Miskovsky - Fallingwater (no label on the disc)
