I am currently considering whether I should make the jump to a more useful portable V-Moda M100 type headphones or a more-acclaimed home listening open headphones like the HE-400.

 

If you are coming from cheap $10 headphones, you don't actually need to jump that much higher in price to get a big upgrade. I think going up to $100-200 you will already notice an improvement. Glad to see that you have sucha baller budged & I would love to hear your new-comer impressions of high-end equipment and whether it's worth the jump.
