Or Mr. Speaker's Mad Dogs (same price as K550) w/ some good source/amp combo

Or if you want to scale even higher, Fostex TH600, TH900...

Those are all closed-back headphones. Pretty much every open-back headphone over $200 MSRP sounds better than the K550 IMO.

You know, Bill-P, you really make me regret not trying the TH900 at the meet.

@TheReem

FWIW, Mr. Speakers did mention the differences between amping and not amping the Mad Dogs here in this video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3kL6GSGOU4

What about "SoundMagic HP100" or "German Maestro GMP 8.35 D" - according to the reviews they are much, much better then K550.

I attend IUPUI (Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis) -- there's this guy who walks around campus going from class to class with his K550s on. Caught me by surprise, but more than anything I was just relieved they weren't Beats of some sort. wink.gif

In any case, I saved up a bit (okay, for *me* a lot) of money and bought the Mad Dogs a month or so ago. They sound great, but I can confirm that they need at least some sort of amp for them to come alive. I have no experience with the K550 set.
