Budget Amp

Thread Starter

I'm looking for a desktop amp for less than £100 to drive my Senn 439s and BD770 Pros, my Clip+ being the source. So far I've been looking at Schiit Magni, JDS O2 and the Little Dot MkII (or III if it's worth stretching my budget) so could I have some opinions on these and potentially some others. Thanks in advance cool.gif

Bearing in mind £100 is approx $150

All written accounts indicate the Magni is a killer kit.

I can't speak to the other amps, but I'm very pleased with my Magni so far. I don't own anything extremely difficult to drive, so it is easily powerful enough to handle what I've thrown at it.

You will be very pleased with the performance of the Schiit Magni, especially if this is your first amp. It is a good overall amp, that can drive a wide range of headphones. I was very pleased with the power and sound of the Magni.

I think I'm leaning towards the Magni, it looks lovely and I'm yet to hear anything bad about the amp or Schiit as a whole. Have any of you had any experiences with the Little Dot? I've seen a few going for cheap on ebay and was wondering how they compare considering they use tubes?

"Deals" on ebay are rarely as much of a deal they advertise themselves to be.

Schiit offers generous warranty and great customer service.  Ebay is buyer beware.

It sounds like the Schiit's the way to go. Does anyone know where you can get them in the UK?

I don't think the Magni has a UK power source available. For now its US-only, at least without a workaround of some sort.

Damn! On their website they say there's no UK version but they link a UK supplier (electromod.co.UK) which has the Magni. Hmm.

Can anyone tell me how the Magni and O2 compare please?

Here's a review from TMRaven whose other reviews I have found very helpful/insightful.

To be fair, he's comparing the whole stacks (DAC + Amp), but hopefully it will be of some use to you.  There are other threads where people have talked about these two amps as well.  Just look them up, and I'm sure you can find some useful information in them. Good luck!

Well that was concise! Looks like I should get the Magni and an adapter although it seems like their is a little Schiit bias on here. I just saw another thread saying that the difference between the M&M and Bitfrost and Asgard stacks was audibly quite little so it seems like it's the way to go!

You do have to bear in mind that oft-times the deals available to our American cousins aren't so fantastic over here. For instance, when the M&M is compared to the O2/ODAC, the latter may be ~50% more expensive. The value argument is bound to be factored in to the recommendation. However, by the time the M&M reaches the UK (whether or not through the UK supplier), it is pushing twice the US price (plus sorting out the power supply).

Now, you may decide that, even so, the M&M is the right choice for you; I'm just pointing out that there are (reasonable) underlying assumptions behind the forum comments that don't apply equally across the globe.

FYI, a UK supplier for the O2 can be easily found on these forums (I'm not trying to sway you as I haven't heard either amp).

I think I'm about to pull the trigger on the Magni. It's only £100 shipped which doesn't seem too bad, can anybody tell me what sort of transformer I need and where I could get one?

Is that direct from Schiit?
