I must say I'm completely pleased with the sound signature of the HE-400s. Dare I say... I'm content! But I need a closed-back alternative for when open cans are just a bad idea. I'm leaning towards the Fostex t50rp and following the mod guide (seriously, what better way to spend $100?). But there are other offerings out there that have advantages. The Sony MDR-1R  looks quite nice are are said to be very comfortable. I've always been a fan of velour Beyers, but can the Custom One Pro can stand up with the HE-400s mids? And then something old or new from Denon perhaps? Can't cost more than the 400s, he'd definitely get offended.

 

I don't expect a twin, but I'd like them both to sound like they came from the same parents, you know? I'm open to your ideas and, more importantly, your experiences.

Mad Dogs with Alpha Pads.

 

Costs less than the HE400. So no offending going on there.

You're probably right about the Mad Dogs. Although, I think I'd rather get stock T50RPs, Alpha Pads, and do some mods myself. It'll be fun, then I'll regret it, and then I'll find a happy accident. That's how it usually goes, except for the times when I completely ruin it.

I just sold my Schiit Valhalla. I think I might sell the O2 as well, get a Mogi/Magni combo, and be done with it.

 

Sure I shouldn't consider a second-hand Denon D600? Looks pretty comfy..

Closest closed headphone to the HE400 are D2000/D5000 imo.  Heard the D600 yesterday and.. no.  Mad Dogs are very nice but are a bit of a mirror image of HE400 (dark and mid-centered, vs. bass and treble emphasized).  Depends if you want a twin or a complement.  Modding T50rps would be great fun and the best bang for your buck for a closed headphone.
