Any C&C is welcome. I'll probably start posting in the DIY theme thread once I get it working a little more (no point derailing this thread)
Cheers

For the X5, I presume? Interesting, but it's not my cup of tea. I prefer an unobtrusive, flatter UI with text. I think @CH23 might be working on something like this, and I might take a stab at replacing the icons with text and simplifying the backgrounds and startup and shutdown animations when I get some time.

Quite honestly, i like the theme on the X5.

When i find the time, i might work out a more flat UI. Need to find out how anti aliasing works :P

I like the theme better than the new X3 theme, but would prefer a flatter interface without all the honeycomb action. For some reason, I thought you were interested in making a more text based interface. Must have you confused with someone else.

Those interested, send me a pm titled "Re: X3 internal beta" with the following details
-email used for bugzilla account (or email that you intend to use with bugzilla account, if you haven't opened one yet)
-your knowledge and experience that you consider to be pertinent to beta testing the X3

Basic requirements for beta testers:
-experienced with use of the X3 and previous firmware
-experienced with the use of bugzilla

Beta testing conditions
-Testers should report bugs to bugzilla and provide detailed descriptions of conditions leading to the bugs
-Testers should not disclose or discuss bugs in public nor disseminate the beta firmware.

Tentative plan is to open a private bugzilla group (so that bugs relating to the internal betas would only be visible to testers and administrators), supplemented by either a Skype group, google group or head-fi group.

Will using a Google Code group help, with all that issue tracking and what not?

Same here, I'd rather prefer text based interface. I really hope there will be one similar to the one in 2.1 :)

I kind of liked the 2.1 sound better. Am i the only one? I think it had darker background and while the soundstage was narrowrer, it had more detail and not excesive high pitch signature. With the beta fw i was on -2 on treble with many songs using my atm-m50.

I think for a lot of people, the small soundstage and downplayed treble was what was missing in the X3. To meet the new firmware fixes those wonderfully.

How does the x3 compare to the fiio e07k in sq?

any one tried the BETA firmware with modded X3 ?

Is there a way to add more than one song at a time to Favorites?  Going one song at a time for a 1300-track playlist will be no fun at all.  For example, could I synch the playlist (and nothing else) to the SD card, scan the library, "add all" to favorites, then add the rest of my desired albums albums to the SD card?

If not, I sure hope real playlist support will be added in the next FW.

BTW, when I got my X3 yesterday from an amazon seller, it already had FW 2.1 installed.  That was really surprising!

It wasn´t really less treble that was the biggest problem of pre-2.14 firmwares. It was less presence, mids and upper bass. It´s as if they applied an EQ to the old firmwares, an EQ muting everything linearly from 300-11,000 Hz, which of course leaves the rest pronounced. So the old firmwares had lots of very deep bass and lots of very high treble. And the stage not only was small, it was also pretty distant. Someone in this thread said that the X3 didn´t really sound superior to the Sansa Clip+ - that was true. The level of quality of the sound was roughly the same on both units, even though the differences between them were observable.

This changed completely with the new firmware. I cannot remember, that I´ve ever encountered a firmware before that caused changes as huge as these. Changes for the better. Less coloured, more dynamics (much, much more), better precision, way better differentiation... an 180 degree turnaround. And don´t let me start on lossy decoding of mp3 and wma professional. I don´t think I´ve ever heard a portable player having a supreme quality such as this (same goes for the X5) when decoding those two lossy formats.

I´d love to know how the overall better sound was achieved. Right now (without having measured it anew) I assume that volume control algorithms are responsible?

Dang.

It's a good thing the X3 sounds as good as it does.  This UI is a bit of a mess.  No albums by Artist?  That's an awfully elementary omission. When I synched to my SD card, MediaMonkey adjusted my file structure to create "Artist - AlbumName" folders for each album so I get a list of albums in artist order within the folder browser, but still.

Also, I'm pretty sure my album art is attached to all my songs' ID3 tags, but it shows up only intermittently.  While playing an album, art would show up on some songs, but not others.  I'm not sure yet if this is a keeper.

There's an albums by artist feature coming in the firmware to be released this month. FW2.14beta has it:

Two known bugs of the 2.14beta:
-Max volume is low (volume had been remapped into 120 steps, but only the first 60 steps are available)
-the menu items for "idle power off" and "sleep" have been mixed up, so you need to set "idle poweroff" to "off" to prevent the player from shutting down (sleeping) in the middle of playing a song.

This user-made mod addresses the volume issue.

No, it's for the X3. When Fiio announced that they were going to re-work the firmware based on the X5 I figured this is what it would look like. Loosely based on what the X5 looks like right now, and most of the gfx are place holders for the time being. I only have got the launcher part working right now, but the rest should fall into place fairly quickly.

I upped a text based firmware a few pages back (at least the launcher part) if you want to have a look. Personally I like an icon based gui, but might work on converting one of my old themes when I get this one done.
