Would you like to have it written or in video?

Typical!
After months with the X3, and waiting more than a month for my preorder X5, which will arrive monday, this update (which is great so far) finally surfaces.

Been a few months Fiio, but solid update.

Well, what's better for you.

edit: Dude, I can figure it out if I find the firmware tools provided for unpacking the old firmware. Where can I get that?

I'll get to it. Give me 10 minutes or so.

EDIT: Done, here you go https://db.tt/6vlPx023. Insctructions for Windows, OSX and GNU/Linux can be found in the README.txt file.

You could just download my volume-modded version (120 steps) and spare yourself the hassle:

Edit: The modded FW linked to in the post above now will revert to the default volume setting that can be defined in the Play settings screen upon reboot. Please set a safe default volume before listening to music.

The new menu and interface are stunning. Useable, convenient and they look really nice. You FiiO guys took a bit out of Windows 8, eh? ;) No, it really looks very, very good. And boy, it´s fast... I´ve never expected the X3 to be this fast on track switching, scrolling through songs... wow. Cannot say anything about the sound of FLAC or MP3, will wait until the volume regression has been fixed.

BTW, I also like that we are all Beta-testers now, all in all this truly is a fantastic development.

I forgot... it´s just cosmetic, but I´d love to see the progression the firmware has taken in numbers. You guys are too humble declinating this firmware as '2.14'. In my opinion, you can at least jump to a '3'. This isn´t a minor change, this is a major overhaul, redesign, whatever you like to call it. A jump to a '3' would not only reflect that for us customers but to you as a company as well.

120? That would be like having the X3 (on the old firmware) go 40 units over maximum. Can the amp stage even handle that without distorting like a mo-fo?

No, the old X3 fimware had 60 steps from 0 to max, the X5 has 120. This is based on the X5 firmware, so 120 is equivalent to the old 60.

From what i have tested i find that the volume is matched when upping by 20 units. 60+20=80, 120-80=40. So 120 would still be 40 units over. I would appreciate it if someone from FiiO could shed some light on this matter.

When opening the "volume-modded" version you find that the max volume is just raised to 120 and nothing else. I doubt that he decompiled the actual binaries and made his own volume curve.

And if the firmware "IS" based on the X5:s firmware why wouldn't they just keep the volume curve from the X5?

If the X3 can handle it then go for it though i wouldn't try it without conformation from FiiO.

The new 2.14beta only works up to 120 steps, everything more shuts off the output so 120 steps it is in the FW apparently.

Best wait for the next Beta, that should clear things up. For anyone who's worried that the max volume might be too high with 120 steps, one can change the max steps limit in the X3 settings.

This is a good precaution to take.

I can't get the default volume to work, it always starts up at the last level set.

Previously I had it set low for my IEMs, so that I wouldn't forget and get a nasty surprise when switching headphones!

Sure, you can set it how ever you want. Though i would still want it validated by someone with actual knowledge about the firmware and the capabilities of the player.

Nothing against your capabilities on using the tools provided, but let fixing it be handled by FiiO and just point out that it can be done instead of posting a "Fix" that's not validated by the manufacturer. The firmware is technically closed source and the only permission that has been given is to change out the themes.

This is a misunderstanding, the max. volume of the X3 is still the same as it was pre 2.14beta, Fiio just have doubled the number of volume steps.

We'll see if they've beefed up the actual max. output but I doubt it.
