FiiO X3 came in the mail! Installed Firmware 2.05, and currently enjoying the X3's! Here's a little comparison with the Sony Walkman E474 ($50 less than the X3 new)

I actually prefer the thinner mids in the X3, as it compliments all my headphones. However, the X3's audio quality is a bit more detailed.
First off, the bass is a bit more solid on the e474, the mids are a bit thinner, but more detailed, the highs are a tad rolled off, and not that bad compared to what graphs on the internet exaggerate. There is some little hump in the 2.5khz area that makes mids a bit fatiguing, but my ears have adjusted.

+ For the X3's ability to drive everything (even the Q701's, the Q701's still have that full warmth and soundstage depth, but it lacks width compared to fully being driven with an ODAC/O2)
+ X3's sound is VERY tight and controlled compared to the E474, I never noticed the loose sound in the E474 until now. Despite having the ODAC/O2, I never really analyzed it that much.
+ Instrument separation and tad more clarity in the midrange
+ Tad more soundstage
+ Clearer at louder volumes

+ For the hunky clunky metal feel and raised buttons compared to the E474, I got used to with the button layout already and enjoy not having to feel around too much

+ Bigger screen (I feel like I'm going backwards in technology, before I wanted slimmer and smaller)
+ Line out option for using with other amps (I plugged my headphones directly into this, worst idea I've ever had)
+ DAC option with the new update (micro sd card wasn't included unfortunately to perform the update, had to use my phone's sd card temporarily. However do note that in the manual it says to use rear usb ports of desktops, or usb 3.0, as this fixes the clicking noises in high data playback)
+ For memory expansion (I convert to Q -1.00 .m4a so I only realistically need 4gb of space)
+ For the solid bass boost (clear bass on the E474 is more preferred on my IEM's, whilst bass and treble EQ on the X3 feels better on larger driver sized devices)
+ X3's better shuffle, E474's shuffle algorithm seems more linear without the SenseMe Channels
+ Customizable UI
+/- Fast forwarding, E474 fast forwarding in live playback and can hear which part to stop at. X3 pauses the song, and skips to whatever time the user sets it at. However, the paused fast forward is smoother on the X3, E474's paused fast forward just skips through 20 second intervals.
++ Able to delete songs on the go (easier to drop an entire album and keep the songs I like)
-- Slower interface (E474's all songs menu can be skipped alphabetically, and scrolled down for individual songs, it also has scroll acceleration if button is held long enough. X3's menu is moderately fast, but no alphabetical navigations. Also, trying to skip songs during playback is noticeably slower on the X3, often having to wait an entire second before song playback)

- A tad fatiguing mids that are easily burnt in to my brain, but my initial impression left me a bit disappointed when playing my first song
- A cold screen colour temperature (about 7000k), and less warm/cozy feeling than the E474. Also for the screen size, it doesn't look very crisp
- Screen doesn't get as bright compared to the E474

- E474 has ~30 hours realistically of battery life, X3 gets 11-12 hours as confirmed by many users.
- Gapless playback doesn't do much for me since I have shuffle on all the time. E474 basically has gapless playback even on shuffle
- Max volume adjustments only go down to 31.. not something to complain about, but worth mentioning.

- Can't have any images larger than ~800x800 pixels? anything larger than that and the X3 can't display it, however the E474 can as long as it's jpg
- No Radio, E474 has it, but I don't listen to the radio anyways.
- No time/date on the X3, a feature I actually liked having on the E474.

- No graphic EQ on the X3, E474 has it. I don't use the EQ on the E474 except for bass boosting (which X3 does better), but I used it once on the Beyerdynamic COP due to the 2.5khz spike.

Summary?

I've gotten accustomed to the X3 by now, and it definitely does what my primary concern is; better sound quality.

In the shop were I bought it, the dealer told me he sets the region to China or something other than Europe because that way the volume can go to 60. Perhaps a legal issue in some regions. Anyway volume here goes up to 60 on the X3 running firmware 2.1

I said go down, not up. Sorry for the confusion :P

Weird, I know, but when I'm on the bus; I have an itch to increase volume to compensate for the lack of isolation. I know I can just adjust it and not move up the volume any higher, but I just found it odd it just stopped going lower than 31

I think that's pretty amazing, considering the fact I'm working on my own UI with your firmware tools for 2.05. Similar to how V-Moda has their headphones customizable, it would be awesome if the FiiO image files could be customized ourselves.

My X3 has 3 dead pixels... haven't even owned it long. "/

I have 1 dead pixel and honestly, I don't care, as it doesn't affect the sound at all. I love my X3.

guys could you help me decide, I really wanna hear your opinions since you already own the x3 thanks here is my thread

Well, this is my fourth post in the thread and I am going to be saying goodbye to the X3. I have been reading this forum since before the X3 was released and purchased one at launch. I've loved the sound from the device and it's served me well (except for the constant random lock up issues with gapless). I've waited patiently for the latest firmware and the new UI but I just have to leave at this point.

My new interest is the X5. I've been swayed by her solid lines, curves (wheel), and pretty face(screen). She sings sweet music in my ears and doesn't hold anything back. Tells me everything I want to hear with confidence and sweetness at the same time and doesn't leave out any details. She also compliments almost everything I wear, SRH840, AKG-K550, M-100 and my LCD-2. It all just fits together.

To be honest it's not the X3, it's me. I've just moved on. cool.gif

I couldn't resist. I was going to keep the X3, but my friend offered me a price I couldn't refuse because he didn't like his X5.

Later.

At least you are still in the FiiO camp. Enjoy your X5!

I think FiiO is still working on it so it will be a few months.
