Is there any advantage to bypassing the amp of the X3 by using the E12... with low impedance headphones (Grado)?

Any difference in SQ?

btw. I kind of like the bass-boost on the E12.

the advantage is you can have more transparent SQ and wider sound stage.

What is exactly a transparent SQ?

Generally it means that whatever component is being described as such adds as little coloration* as possible to the input signal. As for what it means within a comparison between the X3's amp and the E12 in particular, I can't be definite. Context clues suggest that perhaps the warmth of the X3's sound isn't coming from the output stage of the DAC but from the amp itself.

*Generally speaking the term would be distortion, but there are many kinds of it - from dynamic drivers that flex or are going beyond their excursion parameters (which can be because of a mismatched amp playing too loud) all the way through to vacuum tubes making the sound warmer - and usually when "transparency" is mentioned it belongs more to the latter end of the spectrum.

I use my x3 with e12.yes,there is a noticeable improvement in sq.
Sound stage is wider. This is the biggest improvement that I noticed with Q701.then the clarity! The lower mid range sounds cleaner than using x3 along.and the Bass get tighten up with e12.Bass is smooth and silk with e12.But I noticed all these with my q701.then I switched to my bose Ae2.It did improve the sound a bit.overall the e12 makes the x3 sound smoother!

Does anyone know what's up with the constant freezing of the X3? The screen just goes black with the song still playing but when I push buttons the device remains unresponsive

What firmware are you on?  Do you have Gapless enabled?

I had very little problems with gapless playback of FLAC files so far. Yesterday, I converted some files to Vorbis and was shocked, that the tags were not recognized, and the sound quality is horrible. The files were encoded with oggenc and quality level 8. They sound great on PC (with the X3 as DAC), but poor on the device. Do MP3's work fine? I'm using firmware FW2.1. Any news about a firmware update? Right now the player does not support OGG files in my opinion mad.gif

Sorry, James, I saw your message just after posting, but do still think this issue is unacceptable. Fortunately I bought the X3 with FW2.1 pre-installed and never experienced older versions.

Ogg has known issues.

They should fix it, if and when I am not sure. Embedded work is not easy ;)

I however do agree. Lets just wait and see but OGG is a much lesser used format so it will get less attention then say MP3.

what is your experience with low/high gain option? i ignored that feature because i thought it just gives you more volume for headphones with high impedance but i tried it yesterday with my headphones ath es10, which doesnt need extra volume (i use 20-25) and music sounds better with high gain...quite a lot better. Is it possible, that on some headphones it can improve sound? Even if they are low impedance closed headphones?

that's the marvel of brain tricking. all you can do with gain is listen to lower, then to lowder. obviously louder sounds better(that is a fact).

now all the amp makers I ever asked told me to go with low gain and only higher gain when more volume was needed. if only for sake of distorsion.

on a few sources/amps the high gain also have a ****ty impedance. that can change things a little, usually not for better. but that's not the case on the X3.

How would I hook up the E12 to the X3? And what type of cable is best?
Thx

You would hook up the Line Out from the X3 to the Input on the E12.

Any short 3.5mm TRS to 3.5mm TRS will do, eBay has quite an assortment of nice looking cables. Or you can use the supplied cable that came with the E12. smily_headphones1.gif
