I don't hear the noise, either, but I don't have many MP3 - mostly AAC & FLAC.

It sounds like you've got Automatic library updating enabled. Try switching to Manual library updates. The library function isn't that helpful anyway, so I'd guess most of us are going the Browse Files route. If you're just using Browse Files, there's no point in forcing the X3 to auto-update the library.

Good luck and happy listening!

Glad to see some bugs changing to "In Progress"! Go Team Fiio!!!

Those who rant about mp3: Have you tried converting from lossless to CBR320 mp3 and compared the difference? I did, and if I did a blind test, I won't be able to tell the difference. Even if I know that that file is mp3 or wav, I still couldnt tell any difference at all.

Bad sound can be due to many factors - the file itself could be bad(don't blame the format), the unit you got was defective(not that I ever got one before), or you just have golden ears bestowed by the heavens that common people like me do not have.

I reiterate: I love my x3 and it's probably one of the most value for money purchases I ever did, and trust me, I do buy alot of things.

The 'noise' problem (sounds like quantization errors) that sometimes accompanies mp3 decoding is known and being worked on by FiiO. It can't be easily heard with a lot of mp3's but files with a very high dynamic range like a lot of classical recordings can show the problem quite noticeably.

While admittedly annoying it is a known problem and FiiO is trying to remedy it so discussions whether it exists or not are sort of redundant at this point.

BTW I opened a request for the implementation of a replay gain option for the X3, if you'd like to see this implemented as well please take the time to vote for it here:

Implement replay gain option

I just want a fade in fade out and a EQ and I'll be good.
I just want ReplayGain with the ability to drop the pre-gain even more.

For those, who don't hear the mp3 decoding noise, but want to :-)

Try Audio DiffMaker and listen to the diff file.

Or listen to the diff file I made ... http://www.head-fi.org/t/651769/the-fiio-x3-thread/6645#post_10005830

Anyone know of a bag or pouch or something. I could use to wear the player and amp aroundy neck? I know the fake leather one has a lanyard hoop but I can't fit a amp wit that. I have the e11

Maybe some pouch for a compact camera? Loads of choice in that area and most of them come with a strap. Pick one with a wider strap for added comfort over longer periods of carrying like this...

I had good experiences with the Lowepro Apex range and bags & pouches by Naneu pro (97% as good as Lowepro, but quite a bit cheaper).

No.. just kidding. Everyone needs one!

I really wish I couldnt hear it. Or that it wouldnt bother me so much. The X3 sounds very nice in other regards. But I do notice it, and it bothers me... I just can believe that others dont.

I dont really think it is hardware related, FLAC files sound pristine, the quiet parts of the MP3 are the offenders.

What I can make out on my X3 listening to CBR 320kbps MP3 is essentially quantization distortion

It's on the quiet parts of the music and sounds like a mash of high pitch sounds "bubbling" and mixing.

Really hope FiiO can fix this with appropriate Mp3 decoder updates.

Anyone using the X3 (using the line out) with the FiiO E12 Mont Blanc and if so, did you find the E12 to be a worthwhile addition to the X3 when used with portable or full-size headphones?

I already have the less expensive E11 amp, but I've never had the opportunity to hear the E12. I'm enjoying the X3 so much (as most audiophiles are nuts, why stop there?) and it has me wondering if the better amp (Mont Blanc) would raise its overall performance. I've been using the X3 with full-size and portable headphones more than my IEM's. I certainly wouldn't mind owning the E12 and it would look real nice strapped to the X3 but if its a lateral move from the E11 (I kinda doubt that) then I'll just save my money.

I should add that I'm only using FLAC and Wav files with the X3 and probably half of them are 24/96.

Thanks in advance for any input you may be able to provide.

I'm also using an E12 v1 and E12 DIY (stock so far) with my X3 and find a positive difference with my full size headphones, which are a bit harder to drive than my IEMs. So I use the E12s when stationary at home or work when I'm more likely to use full-size headphones, for instance, but not on the go when I'm more likely to use IEMs.

Just ran a little test tonight with the X3, E11 and E12 with Metallica's The Unforgiven in 24/96 through the beyerdynamic DT880 Pro's.

Overall I enjoyed the Bass Boost on the E11 better than the E12 with the DT880`s. I`ll have to try with my `Sones and see if it is any better.

The sound quality of the E12 is much better than the E11, the crossfeed is a nice feature with certain tracks and I wish they would have made the switch for it like the Bass Boost switch. With 16dB of gain it has plenty power to spare for the hungry DT880`s, you will definately not need the extra power with low impedence headphones this thing gets loud quick.

I ordered the E12 as I thought the power output of the X3 was going to be lacking like the Colorfly C3 is, boy was I was wrong there. With the X3 on High it has enough power for my DT880`s but using the E12 with it allows me to switch the X3 out of the High Gain battery chewer mode and let the E12 do all the heavy lifting.

Thanks guys for the input!

Good to know, I've used the lower bass boost setting on the E11 at times with some headphones and I've enjoyed it. The X3's have more power that I had expected, but I figured that the E12 being added to the mix couldn't hurt. I haven't had the time to read much about the sound quality difference between the E11 and the E12, but I assume that the E12 is a bit cleaner (not that the E11 is bad at all).

I'd like to hear the Crossfeed of the E12...not sure if I'd use that a lot or not. Does it sound natural? Same tone/sound quality but with a more expansive soundstage?
