Go figure, if you're happy carrying around double the gear (?) or love putting it through extra circuitry to reduce power and quality.

How about the DAC? Got similarity with Fiio DAC? Or it's an improvement for certain model?

I have both of them ..... fiio x3 & e11.....not sure what i prefer the x3 alone or the x3+e11 ......but in my opinion it does not worth adding the extra bulk at all .....the combo - i guess - is more powerful ......on my se535 ......i listen comfortably between 2-3 on low gain ......the x3 alone from 20 -23 on high gain to the same song
i guess that added power & the less warmness ( still there but very light ) gives the impression of the better sound ... i think they have the same amp chip but different implementation

The E11 is rated at 180mW @ 32ohms, whereas the X3 is rated at 270mW @ 32ohms - or 50% more mW output at 32ohms. I'm surprised using the E11 + X3 is more powerful than just using the X3 alone. Am I missing something?

I haven't done any A/B comparisons with bass boost from the E11 vs. the X3 yet. I'm on vacation and don't have the E11 with me. Anyone care to comment?

Oh yeah, does anyone know where to get some of the black port covers that plug into the HP and LO jacks like the X5 has? Someone posted an ebay link at some point in this or the X5 thread, but I can't dig up the link.

Thanks,
Nikolaus

me too surprised as well !! .... but that is the real case here as i wrote in my last post ( i think it is something about the analog volume pot in e11 VS the digital volume in x3 ) .
i tested the bass boost .... on the e11 as usual adds a little heft to the sound without affecting the mid .... on x3 faaar more powerful and weighty but boosting the lower mids a bit as well

I think maybe you mean using the E11 + X3 is louder than the X3 alone the way you are using them (using the headphone out I hope for the X3 alone:smile_phones:)  and at some unspecified setting (?)

that doesn't mean it's more power capability.

The line out of X3 is specced @ 1.7V rms which is 2 to 3 times the input sensitivity of the E11, so if that's how you are connecting them you are risking overloading (thus distorting) the E11 unless the attenuator (E11 volume control) is before the voltage gain stage.

Gain settings are purely relative and seldom relate to absolute power. (keeping it simple)

Just louder because you are feeding it a high level source, why the problem with X3 at 20-23? I use mine much higher on some phones - not an issue just means you've got power in hand - doesn't hurt it.

X3 DAC compared to any FiiO DAC product? I mean, if the amp is the same/ compared with E11, how about the DAC part?

Well it's a lot better than the E11's DAC

Not quite sure where you are heading...

I own E07, E10 but I use X3 in preference as it's an all in one.

I don't own any higher end DACs ('cept one that's WIP)

I do have ODAC and 2 HiFiMeDIY Sabre DACs (v1,v2), ODAC built in to O2 amp for home PC use (HD650) and HiFiMeDIY for laptop bag and/or iPad, and a few other Head Amps.

If I had Bottlhead Crack and HD6xx I'd probably look for a higher end DAC.

(?)

I ask because I'm interested to know where is X3 DAC level on. :D I use X3 as my DAP and portable DAC amp, and they serve me well.

Currently using my ipod/iphone/iPad--> Schiit vali --> hifiman he400. Would a x3--> vali--> he400 give me a noticeable increase in SQ?
Basically is the dac in the x3 much better than the dac in these apple products? Or am I better off getting an I device compatable dac?

no problem at all :normal_smile : .....it is simply the most powerful player i have ever had.. because of that i said previously there is no need for that combo ...... and thanks a lot for the valuable informations ....do you have any ideas of upgrading amplifier for the x3 .... C5 for example would be suitable ?

The FiiO E12 is a portable powerhouse, E12DIY great for chip rollers.

I have no experience of these or C5 (C5 doesn't seem to offer much if anything above X3 spec wise).

I have portable amp(s) that uses 2x 9V batteries powering AD797 amps with BUF634 in loop ($70 on ebay) nice for the price (or twice the price... or..).

I just use X3 as is.

Duno about fiio but the x3 uses the same Wolfson DAC chip as the AK100

I think you'll find all Fiios except X5 ( E07,E10, E17, X3) use Wolfson WM8740 DAC
