Sounds interesting to mod the fiio x3 since I don't really have enough to get the fiio x5 lol

I'm torn between buying a ipod classic 7th gen vs an X3. I can rockbox the 7th gen which will allow me to play almost all formats. My question is if the sound quality of an x3 is better than a classic?

x3 sounds better than ipod classic

and x3 has a decent amp

you can see some comparison here

There is a short thread
Herehttp://www.head-fi.org/t/630401/ipod-classic-160gb-7th-gen

......

EDIT....Mmet beat me to it.

I have a ebay ipod 5.5 80g on its way, together with the fiio x3.....due to stupidity.... But to the OP, the fiio apeals to me because of the sample rates it supports and because it supports the formats I use, natively, and the digital out. I suspect I will be putting the 80 gig ipod back on ebay immediately on SQ alone.

Data capacity may be a consideration for you?

Usually that line proceeds lots of ocular ingested bleach or results in a blood problem for your alcohol system. :p

This is the thread I referred to : http://www.head-fi.org/t/532426/ipod-classic-rockbox-its-happening

Space is a consideration of course but I am not going to be using 160 GB at one go. Either ways, I couldn`t wait and bought myself an X3 :D Haven`t spent too much time on it but my initial impression of it makes me think I made the right decision

Thanks for the multiple responses on Rockboxing a Classic. I seem to remember reading something about this and deciding the problems out weighed the advantages. I'll have to read it again.

I'm just going to use dbpoweramp and convert my flac files to alac, lossless is lossless, and run it out the line level dock connector to my e11. I've tried my mp3's that way and it sounded real good. I just need to convert and re rip some now. I'm sure the X3 has some SQ advantages but I like the classic interface. No perfect answers with audio.
